HardtopSS 05-24-2005, 05:27 PM It is getting way to hot down here in GA. It was bordering on 100 today. My A/C works but it blows hot, hot air. Argg it pisses me off. What is wrong? Do I just need more A/C Coolant or is the compressor ****ed or what?
IROC-T 05-24-2005, 06:03 PM First raise the hood
then start car
then turn on AC
then go to front of car and see if the AC pump is actulally turning(not just the pulley but the hole front part)
if it is then the problem is in the heat/air blend door
if it isn't the AC unit needs repair/recharge. :)
taguy001 05-24-2005, 06:10 PM has the car ever had the a/c recharged? If the a/c compressor is working my bet is that is just needs to be recharged.
Donohue96M6Z28 05-24-2005, 06:20 PM ya just try adding freon, thats my bet, cheap and easy, might as well try it
IROC-T 05-24-2005, 06:24 PM ya just try adding freon, thats my bet, cheap and easy, might as well try it
Where do you find Freon cheap? it's like $50 out here, and you have to be licensed to get it.
taguy001 05-24-2005, 06:25 PM that's probably because you're in cali and they're strict with pollution, out here you can purchases r-134a at the local pep boys.
IROC-T 05-24-2005, 06:32 PM My bad,I was thinkin' R12 not 134. Yeah 134 is like $5 a can so it's not to bad,but 134 isn't really Freon.
taguy001 05-24-2005, 07:53 PM Ya r-12 is priced insanely because they taxed the hell out of it due to all the damage it does to the environment. Why do you say r-134 isn't freon?
ayalam 05-24-2005, 11:14 PM mines doing the same thing imma go to autozone and get the recharge kit

They are both refridiants, but two seperate gases. I don't know the chemical equations for each, but I do know that freon is a type of gas and 134 is a differant type. Kind of like Oxygen and air, they both work, but are differant. :)
corky9491 05-24-2005, 11:36 PM You should find the place were the refrigerant is leaking from, it's a closed sytem, and if you don't it will only eventually leak out again.

I'm aware that they have a different make up however i always hear everybody refer to 134a as freon as well, just curious to see what the difference is.

It's kinda like a vacuum bottle, everyone calls them a Thermos bottle. Only Thermos makes a Thermos bottle, the rest are vacuum bottles. Not being a smart@ss hear just making a point.
Johnny-Z-Man 05-25-2005, 11:07 PM You only need a very small amount of R-134 in the system for the A/C clutch to engage.
You should be looking for a broken wire at the A/C compressor's connector. (If your lucky, that's your problem)
If the connector looks good, trace the two wires upwards by the throttle body. With the A/C controls on, test the 2 wires for power and ground.
If that checks out, I would suspect a leak in the system or faulty compressor.

anasazi 05-25-2005, 11:40 PM A/C stuff is best left to the professional.
you have been warned.
baron4406 05-26-2005, 07:48 PM I have an A/C license, Freon is technically a name that's owned by DuPont-it refers to CFC's like R11,R12, & R500.
R-12 which was widely used in cars until the early 90's was illegal to manufacture after 1995 under the Montreal Protocol (1987), all nations that agreed to that protocol banned the manufacture. If you wondering Mexico does not follow the Protocol and still manufactures R12. R134a is a replacement for R12 but is incompatable with the mineral oils used with R12. you have to use an ester based oil for your compressor with R134a.
On to your problem, there's some good advice on here. Just see if your compressor is actually working. It may need a recharge. The BEST advice is to take it to a professional. Don't mess with refrigerants unless you are trained to.
BTW R12 is not banned outright, you can still buy it if you can find it. The reason its so expensive?? Has nothing to do with taxes, its supply and demand. It hasn't been made in 10 years so its bound to be pricey. However the only person who can legally buy MOST refrigerants is someone holding a license thanks to provisions in the clean air Act of 1990 (I think 1993 or 1994 is when it became law). The exception?? Our old freind R134a, its an HFC (Hydroflorocarbon) and has no chlorine and thus is not harmful to the ozone-so anyone can buy it (However this may change soon I've been told) It however DOES contribute to global warming so its illegal to vent it to atmosphere. Fines if you have a neighbor who hates you and sees you?? Up to $25,000 a day.
IROC-T 05-26-2005, 11:32 PM Thanks for the clarification,CFC's,HFC's are what I couldn't remember, and I guess I was alittle off base with the Freon name thing,I did think that was type of gas. Learn something new, every day. :)
