You'll have to RTFM on the USB-232 adapter. They are notoriously flaky.

If it is a USB to RS-232 adapter, I highly doubt that it will work with DataMaster. The way that DataMaster accesses the serial port will probably not work with the USB to RS-232 converter. Most likely DataMaster uses raw data access to the serial port. You will not be able to do this with a USB to serial converter. Also, Windows will probably not even see the adapter as a serial port. It will just believe you are hooking a mouse up to the USB port (like you are seeing currently), since many newer mice have the ability to be used as serial or USB with the use of the appropriate adapter.
You need a laptop with a serial port built in.

nope... wrong datamster will work with a usb to serial adapter. ive only loaded about 200 tunes with one, but it will only work with very few convertors. belkin fsu105 (or something like that) is what i use.
go to akmcables .com and look at the ones he recomends.
do a search and you will see what has worked and what hasnt
