its kinda like the name implies, its a safety device that will blow, releasing the nitrous thru the tube and out your car, if the pressure in your bottle gets to high. That way the bottle wont explode in your car. I'm sure someone on here can give a more technical answer but i'm also new to nitrous only had my kit a little over 2 months :)
hope that helps

For vehicles where the bottle is inside the passenger compartment (maybe trunk too in the case of cars with trunks), NHRA rules require the use of a blow-down tube and fitting to ventilate the nitrous outside of the car in an emergency.

See, the nitrous in that bottle can kill you if you inhale it.

There is a fitting on most bottles for a burst disk, normally a 3000 psi disk is used. A hard tube is screwed on to that fitting and it is run to the outside of the vehicle. If the disk ruptures from an overpressure situation in the bottle, the nitrous will vent outside rather than inside the car.

The blow down tube is simply bent aluminum. The burst disc is a fitting that is a safety precaution. When the bottle pressure exceeds 3000psi the burst disc inside of the blow fitting will "burst" and allow the nitrous to safely flow out of the bottle, through the blow down tube. This disc blows before the valve itself grenades and really makes a mess. You must channel the blow down tube out of the car, else the nitrous would just burst and blow inside of the car - very dangerous.

can i mount my nitrous bottle in the back seat area, i was thinking on the hump in the floor, and run a tube through the floor. i want easy access to it, without a remote opener. would tracks be cool with the bottle there instead of in the trunk, and could i just run the tube through the floorpan somehow?

You can sit the bottle right next to you in the passenger area if you want. It just needs to be mounted solidly and the safety blowdown tube fitting kit needs to be purchased and installed. BTW the disc blows way before 3000 psi. Try 1500 or a bit lower.
