whatsup 05-03-2005, 07:44 AM Just heard the whole story yesterday. Last week there was a accident here locally. A 17 year old's dad bought him a Viper for a Graduation present. Gave the car to him at noon. By 3pm the car was wrapped around a tree killing the passenger....the driver ended up dying yesterday. Remember to respect the power these cars of ours , and others , put out...things can happen in a blink of an eye!!!
Antz97ZNJ 05-03-2005, 08:20 AM what idiot would buy his 17 yo son a Viper  There was a similar story around here but the kid just totaled the Viper, next day I think his parents went out and bought him a vette...guess some people never learn.
GhostRider 19 05-03-2005, 05:31 PM Sounds like a story here last summer, Kid was going to a graduation party, and his dad let him and 2 friends take his ferrari(don't remember model, but IIRC it was a 360?) anyway kid had been drinkingat the party then drove home. He was doing 100+ on a back road before he lost control and wrapped it around a tree...killed both passengers(how you put 3 people in a 2 seat ferrari is past me?) But kid just got sentenced to IIRC 25 years for involentary manslaughter...they reduced the charges because of his age!

money makes some people stupid. reedmans auto world in bucks co. pa has a large assortment of vettes. back in the 90's, the batboy (17-18 y/o)for the phillies came in with cash and wanted to get a zr1. he took it on their test track (they have their own to keep insurance down) and put one thru the fence wrecking the zr1. so they ban zr1's on the course. next week, regular 96 vette took out a row of cars guarding the fence. the track is small, hard to make it out of second gear with a 4 cylinder let alone an 8.
narlydude 05-03-2005, 07:37 PM WOW dont call him an idiot or stupid. thats some sad **** have some respect. damn....just because people are born rich dont make them cocky or anyhting. you never no the story either cuz you werent there so dont judge people thats just ****ed up. what if his dad or friend was on this site and saw what you *******s said about him. just think before you type....

I have total respect for those kids that passed away, but if you give any 17 year-old kid a viper that's just asking for trouble. Sorry that was just a stupid move, if this offends you sorry but it's only the truth.
Mindgame 05-03-2005, 09:14 PM There have been many a Viper found wrapped 'round a tree. They don't call em Vipers for no reason. Just make sure you've got em pointed straight before you pull the trigger.
All that aside, I'd never give a kid anything like that but that's not to take anything away from the point of this post. Yes... "With great power comes great responsibility". True for Spiderman and even truer for those of us who own powerful cars.
Be careful out there.

9TransAM4 05-03-2005, 10:54 PM i feel sorry they were stupid and died, it is a shame. as for the parents buying the kid a viper, well the parents dont know their ass from their face. but if i was 17 and handed a viper, you can bet your ass i would do stupid things too. parents stupidity here.... noting more. they should have given their kid an f-body....
BirchMan98z 05-03-2005, 11:03 PM my parents wouldn't even co-sign the loan when I bought my '95z. had to save an extra year for the down payment to keep my monthly payments low. They paid for my '89 plymouth sundance that they bought from my aunt for $800 or something like that-- then I was cut off. My parents are VERY well-to-do also, but I learned some flippin responsibility, so even though I was bitter for a long time, I appreciate what they did for me.

i guess i could have used better language for what i was saying. yes it is a sad event. just because the parents can afford the viper doesnt automatically mean the kid will be able to handle the thing.

Yea let me go buy my son a 500 hp car who just got his license, now thats really smart. Dont think anyone gives a sh!t if he was rich or not, and nobodys judging anyone by their lifestyle status, just not a wise thing to do..That either falls under stupid or idiot in my book. You a rich kid taking something personal?
MarcR94v6 05-07-2005, 10:01 PM that's why when I have a child, their first car shall be a honda  . No camaro for you til 19-20, little one!
CrabhartZ28 05-07-2005, 10:44 PM who would be dumb enough to get a 17 year old a viper? Might as well give an 8 year old a loaded pistol and an idea.
LUDA0840 05-07-2005, 11:51 PM Well I got my car a month before I turned 17. My z28. I know a guy that's also 17, we've been friends since 1st grade and his dad bought him a viper. I would never ride with him! He goes crazy. I too go crazy on my fbody but, I actually control myself. My mom actually didn't want my dad to buy me this car! She would get mad b/c my dad would let me use his old saturn! But here I am in one piece still, and hope to stay like that. :D Be very careful guys!! With great Power comes great responsibility!!! Plus I still havnt gotten a speeding ticket.
CrabhartZ28 05-08-2005, 12:21 AM I got my Z28 at 17 too, that's one thing, but a viper is just suicide, even for me!
At least i had an easier to drive car before this, that's probably that kid's first car.
gee half of your asses are just jealous because you cant afford a viper  I assume people in fbodys never had accidents

Yea i also got my Z28 when i was 17....i wrecked it after 2 weeks. Yes i was young and stupid(which i still am) but i was able to learn a lesson from that. I thank god every day that i didn't do something too stupid to kill myself and lucky for me i still have my car. All in all that was a good experience for me cause i am now able to respect horsepower a lot more and am not quite as crazy and stupid.
camzaro28 05-08-2005, 11:44 AM great post BiH :irk:
BirchMan98z 05-09-2005, 01:41 AM most responsible parents who give a damn won't buy a kid ANY sports car for their first drive. Be it a 500 hp viper or a 275 hp LT1, or even 4cyl sports cars, like an eclipse or a prelude, something along those lines. Most parents start their kid off with a semi-decent 4 banger econobox, or the hand-me down 6 cyl. sedan, or station wagon.

I started out with a '90 RS camaro with a 305 pushing a whopping 230 hp if that. lol. I seemed to do ok with that, never got in one wreck in it and only got one BS no front license plate ticket. It's just a matter of teaching the kids to respect the horsepower, something i lost sight of when i got my current car.
whatsup 05-09-2005, 10:58 AM Well since i started this post I'll add my two cents. I'm glad to see some of the responses...I was curious how this would make people think. Growing up in the 70's ( yes I'm old ) I made my share of mistakes as well. First car was a 1969 Buick Lesabre...which while trying to sqeaul tires...wrecked on my second day after getting my license. Boy did I learn from that...Ole man was pissed!!! Next car was a Pacer.. :D Then I moved into the Chevelle's and Camaro's. The thing is those cars (like todays cars) had serious horsepower but didn't go down the road all that great. What I'm trying to say is that now the cars go so fast, and make you feel so comfortable, its to late when you realize your in trouble.
1quikZ 05-14-2005, 10:41 PM I beleive it is truly in the hands of the driver, I have a friend who was given a 96 vette on his 16th birthday, the guy babys his car wont push it past 60 ever, no accidents or tickets yet, and i have 1 speeder and 1 expired tag:p
Carpe Diem 05-15-2005, 12:51 AM gee half of your asses are just jealous because you cant afford a viper  I assume people in fbodys never had accidents
dude, i was in vegas a few years back and rented a viper with a buddy. i had been driving f-bod's since i turned 16 and as a 22 year old behind the wheel of a viper, it scared the sh!t outta me how powerful it was. now take a driver that maybe has a year of experience behind the wheel of a lexus or something, give him a viper, and you are asking for trouble.
no way around it, it was not a good idea for the parents to do that.
btw, an fbod is like playing with a 9mm, you sure can kill someone with it but most of the time people will just get injured. now a damn viper is like a friggin nuke, everyones going home in a casket if you get stupid with it. :death:

HAHA awesome analogy...
TMorgan800 05-16-2005, 12:54 PM My first car was a white '88 IROC convertible. My dad and I both like muscle cars so we put a built 383 in it. Needless to say, I never (and still don't) got ANY tickets or had any accidents with anything besides a curb (judgement error).
It was the best car EVER. At 16, your usually in High School, having a "cool" car is the best.
Sure, you can get the GEO metro "Jelly Bean" car, but what does that say about your charachter? You would look like a pussy, what normal testosterone pumpin 16 year old wants that? - yeah sign me up - RIIGGGHHT.
It boils down to parenting, if your child respects the car and his own safety, then why worry? I wasnt an Angel while driving the car, but I never did anything to jeopordize my safety or the safety of others.
Handing the keys to a dilinquent 16 year old punk-kid that respects nothing because his parents never taught him any values, yeah, bad idea. You can blame the parents if the kid totals the car. Just a result of the upbringing.
Moral of the story - raise your kid the right way, get him a cool car unless you want him to be a complete pussy.
Help the kid get some tail in High School and be a Man with some balls. ;)

qwerty95z 05-16-2005, 01:48 PM I agree with all the people saying giving the viper to the kid was stupid. Im 18 and i would drive like an idiot in any car if i didnt have to pay for it or damages that happened to it. Also it is all in the parenting and role modeling. My parents taught me to respect hp well, plus i watched my brother destroy his camaro because he didnt take care of it and he drove like an idiot......also why my parents made me to pay for my camaro. Its al labout how parents teach there kids to respect property and money.
shady54 05-16-2005, 04:30 PM I got my Z28 at 17 too, that's one thing, but a viper is just suicide, even for me!

Chances are that if hes 17 then its not his first car, especially since they are rich
My first car was a 87 irocz 350 ttops still have it after 2.5 years and i have never had a speeding ticket or accident that was my fault. just how you were brought up i guess.
