Re: Which architecture would you like to see for a 5th gen?

One that gets me IRS, SLA, a rear transaxle, fits a V8, and is inexpensive enough to allow $$ for Cobalt quality interior materials, and delivering an 'SS' or 'Z28' product in the $25K-$29K range.

As of present I don't think this architecture exists, and since reports are incdicating this could well be a 'parts bin' chassis, it should have a new name. In keeping with the Greek nature of naming chassis, I propose the name 'Adonis' after the greek god that emobodied the perfect physical male. And no, I didn't make that up.

I'm also assuming I'm allowed a bit of 'blue sky thinking' here.

Here's the question I asked in the previous thread, but is Caddy getting a new or updated Sigma soon?

If they are, why couldnt GM pull a DCX here and put the volume cars on the older luxury platform, as Mercedes has their new platform and Dodge/Chrysler has the LX?

Where's the "Combo from the best of Kappa and Sigma and Zeta AND Colorado" option?

Sigma gets revised for '07.

The revised Sigma is not necessarily cheaper or more expensive than the original Sigma....just improved/revised.

So now we want IRS AND a rear transaxle? Just go buy a used C5 for crying out loud. What about if I want transverse leaf springs and a full body on hydroformed chassis?

I think all the dreaming about an overly vette-like Camaro just demonstrates how many F-body owners are really just closet Corvette dreamers who can't quite afford the Vette (either ever or "yet").

I'm as big a vette freak as anyone, but I also understand they need to be two distinct cars.

Well, yeah, that would be me. But I do disagree, why shouldn't the Camaro be the 'Poor Man's 'Vette'? It basically has always been that, but obviously with different hardware for certain reasons.

Besides, I want it all until I'm told by authority I have to start making choices . Everybody should.

Poor man's corvette is fine, but when you start adding in all these corvette features, no poor man is going to be able to buy it.

You have to draw the line somewhere, and its going to **** off 50% of the people on this board no matter where you draw it.

How are you going to fit in an even remotely useable rear seat with a rear transaxle? You think the 4th gen's back seats were small.....

You are a wise man, Chris.

as to others:

As you can see by this site, everyone has an opinion..........

........that's good.

However.........

..........getting you all to agree on ANYTHING is next to impossible.........

...............then there's reality...................

some lists I've seen are great.....but the target price range is not even close to allowing a profit.........

.....you really need to think things thru before replying!

Without talking to a engineer, I don't know if I can fit the rear transaxle back there even on a longer wheelbase chassis.

Now, I do not expect to get what I want, being a product designer I am well aware of the compromises that market forces exert on the product development process. Do I expect a rear transaxle, no. Do I want it, yes.

If after I make my 'designer's wish list', the engineer I'm working with says 'great, you can have this, that, and the other, just pick which two', I'd sacrifice the expense of the transaxle for better interior materials.

Maybe I took the thread title too liberally.

Exactly. The Camaro should be lower tech and minus all the cutting edge stuff that you don't really 'need' by necessity of keeping price down but it should soundly engineered with no corners cut in that respect so that it exhibits a level of build quality rivalling the Cobalt and anything else comming out of GM. No squeeks, rattles and a high degree of stiffness. Right there, that goes a long way to building a car that handles well and is receptive to sporty supsension calibrations and serious HP and torque. Quality NOT quantity. By all means offer options like (for instance) interior dress up and navigational aids and heated seats to tempt those who want a bit more luxury. But don't scarifice the quality of engineering and materials in the base package. Because if that's crap, anything else is moot and the press and public will rip it to shreds.
