Fuel Filter

Ever since I got my car I have noticed that it doesn't "feel" as fast as I thought it would. No doubt its way faster than the 'ol V6 camaro, but I think it maybe should have a little bit more. Take for instance, above 90 mph it takes me a few seconds to get from 100-110. Granted, I don't have any basis for comparsion but regardless I think she might have some more in her than she's letting on. Anyway, on to the actualy question.....The T/A just turned over 60k miles today and I doubt the fuel filter/spark plug wires have been changed. My question is do you think that the combination of an old fuel filter and stock plugs/wires would cause me to lose out on enough power to be noticeable? I wouldn't think so but the fuel filter could cause it to be too lean or something ya know? Anyway I'll be replacing them soon and guess I'll see for myself.

It could be very possible. My fuel pump just told me that its time to change the filter, and its been running very sluggish ever since. Tomarrow the new filter is going in, so I'll see if the sluggishness goes away.

fyi, i didn't feel anything different after i did it to my z28 or rs
but the spark plugs definately helped liven up my sixer

I just did the plugs on my 98 with a little over 50k on it. It made a big difference. The stock plugs were junk, huge gaps on the ones missing the puck on the ground electrode. It has also helped gas mileage, especially since I can pop it in OD at lower rpms without it lugging. I can put it in 5th at 35, 6th at 45 when cruising. Before it wouldn't like 6th under 55.

I ohmed the stock wires and all checked about 330, so I reused them, might put better wires on later, but since they are so short, wouldn't probably make much if any difference.

Plan ahead in case plugs are really tight. Access to all except #8 is decent when you remove some stuff. I had to do 8 from the bottom and still had difficulty, and I have small hands. If you have big mitts, good luck.

errr yeah I"m REALLLY not looking forward to this.....I'm gonna just change out the fuel filter tomorrow and try and wait until I put in the headers (this summer) to change the plugs...I remember the cuss fest I had changing the plugs on my 96 V6 'maro :cry:

Anyone know the name of that elbow fuel line that you screw the filter onto? I need a new one of those, I almost stripped the bolt completely trying to change the filter because it was rusted so bad. How much do they cost?

When i read your problem my first thought was dirty fuel injectors. Run some fuel injector cleaner in with your gas and see if that makes a difference. At 60k miles, they certainly have reason to be dirty.

When does a fuel filter need to be changed? Would they check it lets say during an inspection or an oil change?

gm says 30,000 miles change fuel filter, but It's a good idea to change it every year if possable. The fuel filter is an enclosed filter and can not be taken apart unless you tear it open. The fuel filter is on the underbody of the driver side by the rear quater panel.

My ls1 had 106k on it when i changed the fuel filter. Looked as though the previous owner had not changed it at any point in time. When I took the filter off, this black crud poured out of it.

Well I changed it today, the car runs a little smoother now. Before it ran sort of rough above 90 but a quick little blast on the interstate showed that its definately running smoother. I'm going to try the fuel injector cleaner and also some sea foam and see how that affects things. I'll keep you guys updated :)
