Hey guys,
I'm pulling out my gm hotcam due to a vented opti conversion.
I figured to upgrade the camshaft and other valvetrain parts while the motor is apart, again :p My motor is a blown 355.
I was looking at the CC XE blower grinds, 218/230 and the 224/236 duration at 114 lsa cams. Does anyone know if these are capable of passing smog. I did pass the last test easily with the hotcam. The 218 one looks like it has no overlap, while the 224 has 2 degrees of overlap, which isn't all that bad.
Does anyone know how much overlap the hotcam has? I don't even know.
I liked the sound of the 224/230 from a video on LT1 tech, it sounded awesome.
Looking to add some beehive springs along with the cam.

I'm running the 218/230/114LS cam in my blown 350 95 Z28 and my friend runs the 224/236/114LS cam in his blown 383 95 Z28 with AFR heads. Both cars here in San Diego passed smog.

OBE1,
Hey man thanks for that info. That's good news. How is the idle on your cam, is it lopey and how much vacuum? With the hotcam I had around 15" manifold vacuum at 900 rpm.
I'm leaning towards going with the bigger cam since my car is not a daily driver.

well my 224/236 doesn't lope very hard, actually its very slight, unless you open a cutut, then it gets ok. Drivability is great, I never tuned mine so there was some slight cam surge at 5-10 mph, but thats it, all other manners were great, I don't know how much vacuum it had, but I couldn't tell a difference in braking and it idled fine

Thanks for the info James. I had a little cam surge too with the hotcam. It's no big deal to me.
Looks like I'm goin the 224/236 route. Now, I need the other valvetrain parts to go with it. According to comp cams catalog, the springs to get are the 986's. I was going to go with the beehives, but have read some negative comments about them from Crane.

I pull 17" of vacuum at 900 rpm with the 218/230. I had pretty bad cam surge until I hooked up with a great tuner - Jeff Creech. Only a slight lope with this cam.

Wow, 17" is pretty damn impressive. I wonder what Jeff did to smooth it out? I know it's all a secret though :D
I know adding fuel to the motor at lower rpm's helps the idle a lot. The problem is this may burn out your cats, which are designed to run around stochiometric 14.7:1 most of the time.
How can I get ahold of Jeff?
Thanks

Jeff owns Carolina Auto Masters, a tuning shop in North Carolina. A local guy, SS MPSTR, has organized 2 group dyno sessions which makes it worth Jeff time to fly out to Southern California for a 3 - 4 day tuning session. Plans are to have Jeff back out by June. See the thread below for details of the last session:

Private post SS MPSTR to get on the list for the next tuning session.

I passed my 230/236 112 LSA heads cam 96 OB2 Z-28 at a test only center here in cali. The car is stock bottom end untuned...waiting for tunercat. No tricks were used as far as i know.
