Saw my first Cobalt SS in person tonight

it was yellow with the yellow and black interior. it didnt have the performance package but DID have a $2180 "Market adjustment" on it. the guy at the dealer said this was their first one and mentioned it being fun to drive and would scratch 3rd gear. nice to know with it have 30 miles on it. they will be getting the rest in come may. didnt get to drive it cuz it was about 11pm when i stopped by the dealer (out cruising and just happened to see it). i REALLY REALLY like it. i wish i would have waited for it instead of getting my colorado.

Nice! I bet it would look a lot better in a normal color.

Re: Saw my first Cobalt SS in person tonight

I really like the Cobalt, I think it is an OUTSTANDING entry in it's class...

However, the idea of a dealer mark up on a Cobalt, SS or not, is ridiculous.

It's amazing how many customers, and in this case, young customers with a life of car buying ahead of them, get turned off to at least the dealership, and potentially the brand because of these kinds of moves.

Dealerships complain and complain about needing better products, or want the manufacturer to get more customers through their doors somehow, then they smack the customer and the manufacturer in the back of the head with a billy club by trying to pull this kind of stuff.

I aggree that Dealerships share quite a bit of the blame as to lost market share. They expect to markup everything and then hard sell it if someone does actually want to buy it. Sad but that is how things have become that even an entry level Chevy is not immune to mark ups.

Incredibly sad - especially when GM corporate is throwing around incentives like crazy. If a car is hot, great, sell it at MSRP all day long, but don't mark it up - this just backfires in the long run. Look at the GTO. I'm confident that had dealers not marked it UP right out of the box, it would have been a stronger success initially. I realize that GM can't do anything about this, but you'd think dealers would be smarter and realize they are just shooting themselves in the foot. Wouldn't they rather get that car on the street, so folks can see it and they can sell another one to someone else rather than just wait for the one guy with more money than sense? Cobalt SS will be EVERYWHERE in 6 months and they'll probably have rebates to boot.

$2180 "Market adjustment" ?

What was the final sticker price? Around $25k? Would someone tell me again why on earth a "performance-minded" enthusiast would consider paying this when the Mustang GT is in the same ballpark?

I doubt many will cross-shop the two, but yeah, 24-25k for a base Cobalt SS is just stupid. Not the type of car that you'd apply a markup too. Not the type of car people would dig a little deeper into the piggy-bank for. All this will do is stunt sales (like 04 GTO's).

You think that's bad? I bet that dealer will get a fully optioned one soon, and put a 27-28k price tag on the window . Fully loaded example msrp's for $25,650. Add this 2,180 dollar market adjustment and you have a $27,830 Cobalt . I can't even begin to count the number of cars i'd rather have for that price.

Really nice car, but if this dealer gouging is widespread, it won't be good for sales. I really hope that this is an isolated case.

I lie how even though there is a $750 rebate they still throw on the "Market adjustment".

If Im not mistaken , they dont even have to mention the rebate and can claim it themselves once the car is sold .

We live in a performance coupe market that's dominated by the 2005 Mustang GT.

The Cobalt SS needs a "Market adjustment." However, the market adjustment I had in mind was cutting the MSRP by "$2,180," not padding an already bloated sticker price.

Thats such a cool dealer. Take a compact car (basically) that's already 25 grand loaded out and mark up the MSRP, and bring it to the plate at this time of year only to sit beside a lot of vehicles that are $750 to $5000 UNDER their MSRP.

Go Checy Go!

I'll bet that Chevy dealer has a 2004 SSR he can park next to the "Market Adjusted" Cobalt SS.

Re: Saw my first Cobalt SS in person tonight

Everyone is doing it, this day and age its not just GM dealers. A couple of weeks ago I was looking at a Dodge Ram Rumble Bee, that happen to be on display at a local mall. It had a $5000.00 "market adjustment" that put the sticker at $45K+. I couldn't imagine paying that much for that "special" truck.
