K and N Typhoon intake

I was looking on the K and N Typhoon intake website for my car specific parts, and noticed that it claimed to give an 18.29 hp increase. Is this right? Everyother car i looked up had an increase of somewhere between 5-8 hp. I have a 1994 3.4L camaro.

is this it? It doesn't say typhoon, but the HP increase is the same.

http://www.activepowerfilters.com/performance/buy.php?make=cv&year=1994&model=camaro&part_name=cold_air_intake&brand=k-and-n&skipped=true

because I just got and installed that very part and I got a big horsepower boost. I also have a 1994 3.4I don't know enough about cars/hp to doubt it, but I can tell you it was worth the money. Also, I just asked my dad and he said that the figure (18hp) was probably pretty close, so I'd say yes.

18 HP?

Maybe 18 HP if you install the intake in addition to FULL exhaust.

MAYBE.

But 18 from an intake alone? Maybe on a turbocharged engine but not on our engines. I think we'd be lucky if it added 5 to the wheels.

its just like any other CAI, good for 5+ hp, ONLY...

18hp would be on a certain LT1, not every LT1.... but they could back it up, somehow

personally, when i had my 3.4L, i made myself one from piping and a 3" filter, cost about $30, and did the same job as the $200 K&N.... i'd say, for any v6 fbody, take the cheaper route... its not like ur gonna be 'showing off' your engine, right...
but, thats just what i did, and you're entitled to do, and enjoy whatever you choose

What else could one do to a 3.4 to increase HP that is relatively cheap? Maybe something like 'ianwells' suggested. I'm in CA, so don't say any kind of performance chip, they are illegal here. I'm suspicious of gaining HP with just a chip anyhow.

It's quite simple.

For the 3.4 the after market support is minimal.
Gains made by bolt ons are minimal and hardly worth the trouble and money.

What can you do ?

- CAI (home made versions work exellent btw)
- Free flowing (or at least better) exhaust system
- Computer alterations if you are able to find a hypertech programmer (few sold)
- Headers
- Underdrive pulleys.
- usual stuff like performance wires, coil, thermostat, etc.

All these items in total could bring that bad boy upto 190 crank HP (proven on dyno) and THAT'S IT !

There have been fast 3.4 but they were either run on the bottle or using a turbo (with modifications).
None of the bolt on's will make it really fast, it'll just make it run smoother and add some more HP and trq that you will notice but still fail to impress nowadays.

18 HP for ANY airfilter on any GM engine is pure BS and will not be accomplished, not even on V8 engines (dyno proven).

Thanks Sergio. I'm in CA, so programmers and superchargers are illegal. But the rest was some good info, thanks man.

How do headers work from an emissions standpoint? Wouldn't adding headers eliminate the oxygen sensors in the exhaust manifolds, and wouldn't that "confuse" the computer, which relies on them for mixture/emissions info? These are issues I've never heard discussed in reference to late-model (i.e. computer controlled) cars.

The 18.29 HP Gain was from a 96 Camaro 5.7L V8 not a 3.4L V6 it says it on the link http://www.knfilterchargers.com/search/product.aspx?Prod=57-3010-1

And it's not a Typhoon intake it's a Generation II FIPK intake

If you have headers that provide the plugs for the O2 sensors your good to go !

Your welcome Marc !

As for the K&N claim, yeah they will claim anything. You try it and buy that very same setup and dyno it and i bet you will NOT get that 18.29 HP gain.
On the boards MANY people have modified their car including the Intake, i yet have to see such a gain.
Remember that K&N needs to make $$$$ and they'll tell anything to make you believe their product is the very best.
