Hi, guys. I've got a prob. with my car, and I'm about to buy a rear end replacement, and just want some opinions to confirm it's the rear and not a u-joint, trans. mount, or other problem.

1996 Formula: Automatic Tranny

The Problem: When decelerating (coming up to a red light, for example)...right before the car comes to a stop I hear what sounds like a clunk. Sometimes it's louder, sometimes softer. It's not real nasty, but it's there. This same sound occurs sometimes when I first hit the gas at low speeds from idle as well. NO noise from a complete stop, though. NO noise at wot, either.

Rear end problem? My friend @ GM says it's normal and not to worry, but it's really annoying me. I'm going to sell my car soon, and having to tell people there's a rear end noise is not going to help that situation.

I'd guess its the transmission downshifting, my car did the same thing before i changed the fluid (was more prevelent, but when changed fluid wasn't as bad), but i'd guess it's normal.. If it was the trans mount you know it.

That's kind of what I was thinking (the normal thing). I'll change the fluid and see what I get. Thanks for the input!

Throw some Beano in there, it works for some "rear ends".

Do you have a lot of miles on a stock suspension. Try checking for worn bushings or possible even shocks, it could very well be suspension. I got a slight howl to my rearend when I turn a corner, wonder how long that'll last with my new 383,we'll have to see......

I have gone through the same thing twice now. Both times it was the suspension. The first time it took me forever to check all of the rear end, transmission, brakes, etc.. Second time, went right for the shocks, and fixed it quick.

That's very intersting, guys. The car has 67,000 miles. I'll definitely be checking that out. Thanks!

Actually, can you guys recommend any shocks in particular?
