Quite the dilema here: To Cat or Not to Cat?

That is the question! I can get a nice 80-Series catback and headers for under 300 dollars. BUT.. in NYS it is illegal to have a car that came w/ cats, to not have them. What do I do? Spend an extra 60 dollars on a cat and have an exhaust shop make me a y-pipe? No shop around here will touch an exhaust w/out a cat, so I dunno how the HELL I am going to get a custom y-pipe made.
All suggestions, please help out :D

well, you could hollow out the cat yourself. Then you atleast look legal. Its the same way here in TX you cant take them off, but the guy that owned the car before me took them off anyway. Oh well...

The aftermarket cats flow almost as well as a straight pipe anyway, so just spend the $$ on a Catco cat and put it in there. That way no one's on your case and the car is legal. Just keep in mind...if you do any mods that will make the car tend to run rich it will fry the cat in a couple years' time.

Wow.. what a complete jackass!
Sorry, false alarm guys :o

If its illegal in NY not to have a Cat why risk the find by not having one?? A loud exhaust is one way to be stopped and suprise, suprise a fine for no Catalytic convertor. ;)

Replace the cat with a DHM cutout and then swap it for inspection.

Oh snap, I never thought of the fact that if I get caught without one that I can be fined  BUT.. I *rethinked* last night, and the dude selling me the exhaust has a CAT BYPASS, *not* a y-pipe :| So.. I am thinking that I will get the bloody cat, and have someone put it all up for me while making me a custom y-pipe. Is it possible to have the whole exhaust put on, except for the y-pipe, and then at a later time take the car somwhere and have them make me a y-pipe w/out taking the rest of the exhaust off?

orbitalshock; I just want to get everything right so I dont have to fock w/ it at a later time. If there is ONE thing I *HATE* working on it is exhaust.

depending on who you know, some shops will help ya out a little bit. i had a shop who i go to for all my exhaust work, make me a straight pipe with flanges at either end, and they flanged my existing pipes and cat. so that when inspection time came around, i could jack the car up in the driveway, take out 4 bolts holding the cat. in, slip in the flanged straight pipe, bolt that in with the 4 bolts, and go get it inspected...all depends on who ya know i guess ;)

^lol, there's an idea. But my friend, who *also* goes by the name of Matt, has hooked me up with a guy who owns an exhaust shop. I am expecting to pay about 40 dollars to have everything welded up, but I still have to call the guy and see if he will do the work w/out me putting a cat on it. (He worked on Matt's IROC w/out a cat, so I think he will work on mine as well.) But screw it, I am not paying 80 dollars for a cat, only for it to crap out in a few years

A buddy of mine has a friend who someone else knows a place that will do some work on the side. What sounds like a big deal going down. Just put the Fricken Cat on the car and forget the Crap.

Ok.. theres an idea^. Pay 100 bucks for a cat, take the cat and exhaust to a legal-exhaust shop and pay 300 bucks to have everything welded up (and laber, etc..)..
compared to NOT getting that cat, and haveing everyithg welded up for 40 bucks. Good Idea :thumb:
