cc89formula 03-26-2005, 08:36 PM Ok so today I put on some headers that I got used from a friend. They didnt have EGR provsions so we just took it all off, which i had planned on doing later anyway. Driving home I had made it about .2 of a mile and my SES light came on. I know why, now I want to know how to get it to turn off. Anybody know?
respectirocz 03-26-2005, 10:46 PM pull out the ses bulb? lol
Randy92Z 03-26-2005, 11:01 PM You'll have to find someone who can re-program your chip so they can turn off the EGR diagnostics. That will rid you of your SES light.
cc89formula 03-26-2005, 11:16 PM I like the other way, it seems cheaper...
Randy92Z 03-27-2005, 01:13 AM True, that will work, but if your SES light goes off for something else you wont know cause the light will already be on
Dave89IROC 03-27-2005, 08:32 AM umm.........
what EGR provisions are in the headers?
third gen sbc's had it all in the intake/heads
cc89formula 03-27-2005, 01:00 PM no it was actually in the exhaust manifolds. I dont know what they were, I had some friends helping and they know alot about 3rd gens so I just went with what they said.

hmm, might have been the fittings for A.I.R.
85_305 03-27-2005, 03:11 PM ^Ya, he is thinking about AIR. I took that shat off of my Z28 as well :D
cc89formula 03-27-2005, 03:21 PM yeah i guess thats what it was. They were these small aluminum tubes that went into the manifolds right behind every exhaust port.
85_305 03-27-2005, 09:29 PM Yup. That is the A.I.R. system :D

You DO know that when theSES light comes on the ECM goes into limp home mode, right? Your fuel millage is going to take a big dump. You should reprogram, but black electrical tape works good in a pinch.

Thats not true, the computer dosent go into limp home mode unless the ecm fails. Just getting a SES light will not trigger this.
cc89formula 03-28-2005, 06:41 PM i dont really understand the difference in open loop closed loop or limp home modes...but from the way it felt today, its not in limp home mode
Randy92Z 03-29-2005, 12:38 AM Your car is in Open loop when you first start it up (cold) once your car warms up it goes into closed loop and the computer starts reading off your O2 sensor to make fuel adjustments. In Open loop its just basicly a set of parameters for the fuel, untill the car warms up.
IROC-T 03-29-2005, 01:03 AM My bad on the limp home error,I meant open loop, which is differant. Open loop just makes the fuel richer, which will give you a little more power, but will do nothing to help your wallet(rich=$)at the pump not to mention what it will eventualy do to your cat etc.. If your going to run it this way I would do the chip thing and block-off the EGR. Oh,and the tape thing works too. :)
