check the starter solenoid

it should have a heat sheild because when it gets hot it doesnt work, the heat sheild prevents it from getting too hot, when it cools down it works fine

if u dont have a heat sheild or the one u have is rusted, u can pick up a replacement at any auto parts store

My Z is doing the same thing - my buddy and I suspect that a module in distributor is going bad. I've got an MSD distributor coming as part of my planned HSR swap, but you should be able to get the module at the local parts store - if that is your problem.

When you say it doesn't start, what do you mean? Will is not crank? Crank slowly? Crank fine, but not catch?

A very common problem with small block Chevys. The cause is heat soak to the starter solenoid. Replace it and add a heat shield.
