Schmidt519 03-19-2005, 06:00 PM I want to get new rear tires, right now I have Pirelli's 275\35Z\18. My rims are 18 X 10.5 in the rear, so I want to get Nittos should I go with the 295, 305, or 315. And what kind of nittos are good for daily driving.
ULTIMTEORANGESS 03-19-2005, 06:49 PM i have nitto DRs.except for driving in snow theyre fine until they get low on tread like any other tire.
myslowcamaro 03-19-2005, 07:08 PM they say only to expect 10k miles on the life of the tire. same with the bfg's. what part of philly schmidt?
ULTIMTEORANGESS 03-19-2005, 07:10 PM theyll last longer than that.
i had about 15k on mine with 50-60 passes on them with major burnouts.
i sold them and they were about 3/4 down.
Schmidt519 03-19-2005, 07:14 PM they say only to expect 10k miles on the life of the tire. same with the bfg's. what part of philly schmidt?
I'm really not that worried about thread life. 10-15K is fine for me.
And I go to school at Drexel, so I'm like 5 mins from center city
Schmidt519 03-19-2005, 07:17 PM I also heard that when you go with the bigger tires like 315 you can actually lose traction with certain rims if they aren't big enough, what do you think is the best tire width for a 10.5 rim, and I dont want to have to hammer my fender for it to fit.
robvas 03-19-2005, 07:54 PM I'd get about 6-8k out of a set
MBonZ28 03-19-2005, 08:58 PM see what the nitto set says about size......IMO Nittos tend to run a lil narrow. they are fine for everyday driving....just not snow.
Klypto 03-19-2005, 09:11 PM i had just under 9k on them, and they were completly bald...
Fallstar01 03-20-2005, 03:42 PM you should be able to get 12k out of some 555Rs... A buddy of mine did and he used to do lots of burnouts etc. Plus they grip really well.
MakoLS1 03-20-2005, 05:36 PM I drove on nothing but 245-50-16 i Nittos for like 3 years ever since i had my car until i got my draglites now i drive on 275-50-15 m/t drag radials. And depending on how many times i heated the tires up really decided on how many miles they would last, normal they will last awhile. Nitto 555Rs is a great drag radial tire for our cars in terms of hooking and tread life for everyday street use.
Schmidt519 03-20-2005, 06:17 PM If I go with the Nitto NT-555R DR's, should I get the 285 or 305 for the rear, which will be on a 10.5 rim.
MakoLS1 03-20-2005, 06:20 PM Id get the 285s, 305s might be over kill.
1stls1 03-20-2005, 07:07 PM Are you saying 305 wolud be overkill for traction or looks? I have 285 all around, as far as looks, NOT overkill. I know they are not dr's, but they don't hook too well. So that being said, I think the 305's would deff not be overkill. Who don't like the looks of wide tires in the rear?!
blind527 03-20-2005, 07:57 PM I'm getting 315/35/17 in the back and 275 in the front. I dont' think they make a 315 for an 18" wheel.
94ZRiCeKiLr 03-21-2005, 12:55 AM theyll last longer than that.
i had about 15k on mine with 50-60 passes on them with major burnouts.
i sold them and they were about 3/4 down.
i got exactly the same results out of my first set.
BFGs are far different. the treadlife is not nearly as long and they are WAY worse in the rain.
IMO, if you can't safely operate an LS1 f-body in the rain on nittos (that aren't flat bald of course) you can't drive correctly. they're really not bad at all.
'88Saleen 03-21-2005, 07:18 AM I have nitto Dr's on my daily driver. When they are new there is'nt much of a difference while driving in the rain than normal tires. They do howerver pick up every rock you run over it shoot it up into the wheelwells. Avoid freshly paved roads if you can. When they get worn you just have to use your head on wet roads. When I go through some bigger puddles I sometimes can feel the rear wiggle a little bit.
I got about 12k miles on them now and they are almost at the ware mark.I only did i small burnout with them and have'nt got to the track yet.
But I'm not sure if I will get another set for daily driving though. I think I may get the regular nitto 555's to match the fronts and save for a extra set of rims and get some tires that bite even better than nitto Dr's.My buddy went 8.3@163 with those new mickey thompson Dr's in his notchback stang'.

Holy Crap! On drag radials? I know those new MT ET Street DR's are stickey but that is crazy. I'm not saying you are lying but that seems a little far fetched.
1-bad-z28 03-23-2005, 08:25 AM I stand corrected. The MT ET Street DR's claim to have run a 7.57 quarter at 198mph. That is redicules. Who needs slicks anymore when DR's are running mid 7's
BlkLT1Z28 03-23-2005, 08:35 AM I would say get the 305's. If they make a 315 for an 18" rim I think it would be overkill meaning to much tire buldge on the side walls. The 285's I think would look bad b/c I personally hate seeing a small tire on a wide rim. Imagine 225/60/15 on a Z28 rim. It just doesnt look right. It looks like the tire is streching to make it to either side of the rim. I know here at work the 550's and the 575 Maranello's have a 18x10.5 rear rim and they run a 295/35/18. And they are good, but I still think they could put the 305's and look a little better.
shady54 03-24-2005, 11:20 PM I have new nitto 555 tires in my garage waiting to go onto my hyper black Zr1s tomorrwow.. can't wait.. ill have to post picks
Klypto 03-25-2005, 01:42 AM i had 9k on mine when i got new wheels... BUT they were near bald.. and the reason i bought my wheels when i did, bc i had to get new tires for rain.. i was on a road going 40mph.... i literlaly felt the rear going side to side.. like someone said above... be smart about it, and once you start getting bald... GET new ones.. not worth hurting you, someone else OR the car :) hehe
