Z28 vs Cobra then Bullitt

This guy that I work (very nice friendly person) had a 98 Cobra and would always talk a lot of crap in the lunch room about how his cobra would put my Z in it's place because he had a catback and CAI. One day I finally told him that we should go down the road and put this to rest, he laughed and said "if thats what you want". So, a bunch of us went to this long stretch of HWY next to the airport that is no longer used, to settle it. He said we should go from a roll because he has a hard time getting traction. I thought to my self "what an idiot" this gives me a bigger advantage. We start from a 30 roll, three honks and we are off. I instantly pull away and keep pulling away. At the bottom of fourth, I have about 2 to 3 cars on him and shut it down. When we get back, he is saying he didn't think the LT1 Z would take him and he is going to trade in the cobra. About 2 weeks ago he did, he got a 2001 GT Bullitt. Again he has been talking trash so this morning when crusing on I10 coming to work guess who cruises up along side. He rolled down his window and said on three. We are at 75mph so I shift down to 4th and we hit it at the same time. I jump away and at the top of 5th I am at about 130mph and about 4 cars ahead . He never tried to catch up and when we got to work, he stopped by my desk and said "those Z28's are monsters, maby next time" . The Bullitt is a nice looking car and it sounds good but maby next time .

A friend of my son-in-law has a nice 03 cobra, I'm not sure what all it has done to it but when I raced him, he handed me my a$$ pretty quick. But, it was fun and it's a very nice car.

If you wanted to be faster why would you sell the 98 cobra for the 2001 bullit? I would just throw some mods at the cobra.

He is very impressed with this Bullett, he says it's much faster than the cobra, it definately is nicer looking.

Re: Z28 vs Cobra then Bullitt

Good Kill, why would he trade in a 98 Cobra for a bullit which is basically a glorified GT...that doesnt make a whole lot of sence...mod for mod the Cobra would destroy it...Buddy I use to hit the track w/ had a 98, few small mods and a very poor driver still yielded him a 13.3 . Only thing I didnt like about it when I drove it was the 410's, 1st and 2nd gear felt really weak

No pun intended but your buddys clueless, and or cant drive...w/ equal drivers the cobra will eat it up...Cobra packs 40 more ponies right off the bat

Re: Z28 vs Cobra then Bullitt

i say a 96-98 cobra vs a 01 bullit is a damn good race..bullits can hit 13.8 bone stock...same with cobras those years...the bullit porbally also feels faster becuase they make a decent amount of more low end grunt..but start modding the 4v and it becomes a monster..they both basically run the same stock vs stock

Re: Z28 vs Cobra then Bullitt

I think the Bullitt is a great-looking and awesome-sounding car, but how can it hit a 13.8 bone stock when I hear so many people saying that a '99-'04 GT is best for about a 14.0-14.1 and the main performance difference from a GT and a Bullitt is a different intake, and it takes a few bolt-ons to get a GT in the 13s.

Ive heard of bullits hiting 13.6's stock. Evan smith ran his 97 snake to a 13.3 stock...in the right hands 96-98 are mid 13 second cars in factory form ...surely enough to take out a stock sohc...in the everyday drivers hands it might be close.

Re: Z28 vs Cobra then Bullitt

I think your buddy wasted his money as well. Reason bieng is that he didnt better himself and even if the 96-98 Cobra performs close or slightly above a 16v bullitt it does not justify the change. I have a buddy right now in a 97 Cobra with weight reduction to 3,150 (with out driver) , 4.30 gears, weld wheels and exhast and he is pulling the front wheels at the strip to a tune of 8.00s @ 85 mph in the 1/8th with an ungodly 60 ft time of 1.65

I think if he wanted power right out of the box without modding he should have went with 03-04 Cobra or LS1 in the form of a vette.

This of course is my opinion and means about as much as a hill of beans , but I can honestly say from my car trading days....been there...done that

Re: Z28 vs Cobra then Bullitt

I think a good running 98 Cobra would Stomp a bullit. I drove around a 98 Cobra that was bone stock..Belonged to a friend of mine, It was the only N/A mustang I have ever driven besides the mach1 that impressed me. In know it was capable of 13.6's if it had sticky tires. I did however drive a few other cobras of that year that didnt run as good.
I dont think the guy new much about cars though. The cobra engine had potential.

Those people are full of sh**. Stock GTs have gone 13.6 with all planets aligned. A 5-speed hardtop averages low 14s with a decent driver.

It's true that it only has about 5 more peak horsepower but it has a better power curve through the whole RPM range. Not to mention, the Bullitt has a much better suspension package which means it can put more of it's power down.

What did Ford do different to the Bullitt's engine to make it have a better power curve through the whole RPM range?
