can you make lt1 heads fit on a 40095TALT1 03-10-2005, 11:14 PM I was wondering if you can machine a 400 block to fit lt1 heads on it. If anybody could help it would be greatly appreciated. Thanks Waylon soontobeGN 03-10-2005, 11:27 PM You probably could with enough work, but it would be more trouble than it's worth. You could get better gains cheaper with a 1st gen small block head. The LT1 head is reverse cooled, so that would be the major issue. I dont know what exactly is involved but I would just build a gen-1 head. 95TALT1 03-10-2005, 11:32 PM well see the thing is i have a 95 lt1 ta and i want to keep all the lt1 stuff just more cubes if anybody can help I would greatly appreciate it shoebox 03-10-2005, 11:38 PM Even if adapted, I would say you would have big problems keeping the heads cool. The LT1 block flows coolant from the water pump directly to the heads. Your SBC block is not going to do that. soontobeGN 03-10-2005, 11:39 PM Just get your LT1 block bored and stroked to 396 cubes, you can keep everything. If you go to the 400 block, your going to spend the same amount converting the heads. my94blackz 03-10-2005, 11:45 PM he didnt say he was wanting it for an lt1 car. Prolly has a hot rod that he wants a set of well worked lt1 heads to go on a 400 block. Bone Daddy 03-11-2005, 12:00 AM Electric water pump in addition to the mechanical, would solve the cooling problem. soontobeGN 03-11-2005, 01:52 AM Electric water pump in addition to the mechanical, would solve the cooling problem. How, its still a reverse cooled head on a standard block? Just bore and stoke the LT1 and be done with it, easy as that. breakmyfootoff 03-11-2005, 02:01 AM Just bore and stoke the LT1 and be done with it, easy as that. I second that. Or third, or whatever number person I am to agree with it. NOMAD 03-11-2005, 12:05 PM The cost to convert the heads would be far greater than the cost to make the LT-1 block any size you wanted it. You will have to do alot of work to a 400 block to get any of the lt1 stuff to fit. The timing cover is different, the heads, etc. The block would have to be machined severly to fit the optispark on there even. No provisions for Knock sensors. No reverse flow. Best bet is to stroke the LT-1, or go full swap EFI/ distributor with the 400. There are much better heads out there besides the LT-1s anyways. -Shannon | ||
