Here's a real newbie question. I'm looking at breaking into the Camaro world with a private purchase of a 99 Camaro SS. The question is, how do I verify whether or not it is an SS or just a Z-28 with an induction hood, cool exhaust, and SS decals? Also, how do I check on the original color? I ran a Carfax, which came back clean, but it only stated "Z28" and no color designation. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks everybody.

if you goto a chevy dealer and are nice enough, they can run the vin number and give you an option print out with what it came with, including the SS package.

Have you checked the inside of the passenger door? If you open the door, there should be a sticker/decal from SLP, listing the options the car had.
Also, if you have access to any paperwork, ie: the buyers order, look for the code 'WU8' which specifies the car as an SS.

Wouldn't the WU8 code be on the drivers side door sticker where the RPO code are?

Just checked :) On the drivers door, there's 2 stickers; one has the dealer parts codes, and WU8 is listed among them. Also, there's a sticker showing that the car was altered at SLP.

Sounds like you got an SS

that'd be an SS then
the passenger door shows SLP installed options ... but if there were none, then there is no sticker.
WU8 is the option that counts as far as if it got SS badges or not from the factory.

you can also call SLP to see what the VIN on a car pulls up as.
