LT1 FMIC, what kind to get, running piping to it, etc.

I did a search and found a few answers regarding this subject, but still have more questions.

OK, so I really need to get a good intercooler hooked up soon, as I'm tired of dealing with ~200 degree IATs in the summer.

I know I'm looking to get a bar and plate design IC. What size would be best for an LT1 running about 12 psi through an Vortech S-Trim? I'm not looking to spend $1,000 on one, or even close to that amount. I've found some NIB IC's for reasonable prices on eBay, and that would probably be the route I would take. Any particular brands I should stay away from?

Am I right in believing that there are no piping kits out there for hooking up a FMIC in this particular application and that I will have to custom make it all myself?

If so, what has everyone done to ensure correct fitment of the piping? Anyone have tips for materials to use in creating a mock-up of the necessary bends and placement?

Am I going to need to re-clock my Vortech? Is it difficult to do if that is necessary?

I'm just looking for some tips on how to do this effectively with the least amount of money wasted, as well as the fewest headaches incurred. :D I'm just worried about starting this project and not being able to finish it because I don't realize what I'm getting myself into....

If you can find one, get an ATI 3-core. It'll handle the s-trim w/o a problem. I had one w/ the old Procharger setup and have a Spearco now. It's 3 2-110 cores welded together and is about the same length as the 3-core, but much more efficient.

I never did a FMIC on a Vortech, so I couldn't tell you what you'll need for piping. :(

The cheaper intercooler that alot of people are running is the obx intercooler. Do a search on here about obx's and you'll see that many people have given facts that they do work. They are really cheap to. Look on ebay to get one. Hope this helps.

I've done some more searching recently and found the OBX on here and on LS1Tech.com. It'll likely be the unit I'll go with. Looks like it will fit snugly there in the front area of the car (with modifications, of course :D ). My big concern is still with running the piping to it, but I've gotten some good ideas of how to do it.


I still need to know how to re-clock the Vortech, though. Anyone know if its something simple that I can do in my garage? I probably need to get the compressor outlet moved from the 12 o'clock position to the 7 o'clock position or so in order to run the piping over to the passenger's side to get to the inlet of the FMIC.

No one knows how to re-clock a Vortech S-trim, or have seen anyone with pics of how to do it?
