GM on the lookout for new designers

General Motors has lost a couple of its key designers recently as Tom Kearns and Franz von Holzhausen move on to greener pastures. Kearns, a man with 17 years of experience, has left the company to take over as chief designer at Kia's US operations. Von Holzhausen, one of the lead designers on the Pontiac Solstice and the recently revealed Saturn Sky roadster, will join Mazda in California.

Meanwhile, GM’s design chief Ed Welburn told Automotive News that the company plans to add 25 designers and 25 sculptors in its North American operations - a total increase of 10% from current employment levels. According to Welburn, the additional staff is needed to work on a large number of new projects. About 200 designers and 300 sculptors are already employed in the US.

GM, if you're intelligent... get your hands on PlumCrazy from CnG. That man has some talent, not to mention I'd buy 99% of the vehicles he designs.

And here is one of the root problems with herr general...

They refuse to pay talented people to remain with the company, and they instead accept lucrative offers with the competitors. This isnt limited to designers. Engineers are handled the same way. GM treats its vehicle development organ like a damn trade school, hiring nothing but new blood, and letting them loose just as they learn what theyre doing.

I mean, when was the last time you heard of a designer or engineer from Toyonda or Niszda defecting to GM?

TorRed is GMI for PlumCrazy. :D

I will agree that TorRed/PC and Kris need to be sent a letter of intent from GM. Welburn should be already on top of this.

Kris needs a job, and so does plum. Perhaps we should petition GM? :)
