NC 91 Z28 02-15-2005, 03:04 PM Six in Pontiac minivan survive 400-foot plunge.
A family of four and two friends can count their lucky stars, and the fact that they were all wearing seatbelts, for surviving a nearly 400-foot plunge down a Colorado mountain ravine.

"I had a sinking feeling knowing no one could survive that sheer drop," he added, but "I looked over the edge, and ... to our amazement people started to exit the vehicle."
Terri Garcia, in the meantime, was using the Onstar satellite feature of their SUV for the first time to call for help.
Guess it does come in handy in an emergency!

Oh what the hell, i'll beat the anti-onstar folks to the punch:D. "That terri person could have used a simple cell phone to call in for help";).
Btw: I don't hate Onstar. Just figured that comment was bound to be posted sooner or later.

Ya, I figured that would be coming too...
jawzforlife 02-15-2005, 03:31 PM dont tell my wife about this story, otherwise I will have to get it for her.
She is convinced she will die if she doesn't have on-star.

Point out to her that not only did lots of people do fine in accidents before onstar, but they drove rwd v8 cars in ice and snow without stability control and didnt kill themselves before getting off their own street...
redzed 02-15-2005, 04:02 PM Read the rest of the article:
The six also lucked out that a couple in a car behind them noticed the minivan disappeared after taking a curve.
"We rounded a corner ... and the minivan was no longer in front of us," Skip Garcia told the Post. "I glanced down and noticed tire tracks in the fresh, slushy snow headed over the embankment. We glanced up ahead and realized that the vehicle was no longer in front and that it had to have gone over.
"I had a sinking feeling knowing no one could survive that sheer drop," he added, but "I looked over the edge, and ... to our amazement people started to exit the vehicle."
OnStar didn't save anyone in this instance. The other motorist obviously stopped after figuring out the minivan had went off the road. With-or-without OnStar, the six people in the minivan would have survived.
91_z28_4me 02-15-2005, 04:03 PM Edit he beat me to it. :D
Where's redzed??? You KNOW he is going to jump in and talk about what he would have done in his Nissan. :p
I saw that last night and though...theres a free plug for Onstar.

Where's redzed??? You KNOW he is going to jump in and talk about what he would have done in his Nissan. :pNo, fool! It handles so much better than the "antiquated" GMT800 SUVs, there is no way it would have gone off the road and down the ravine! :D

I wouldn't have driven off a cliff to begin with.

Yeah I am sure the other driver meant to also. Accidents happen that is why they are called accidents. How many have you have and how long have you been driving, Mr. Redzed?

I'm sure that part wasn't planned;).
90 Z28SS 02-15-2005, 04:39 PM Though , it may do the looks of that Armeda(sp?) some good after falling from a cliff  :D ;) :p

I've been driving a whole decade and I've been totally accident free. And yes, I've been driving on winter roads that are just as bad as those in Colorado.

I take that as a compliment from a guy who put a '98 front clip on a '95 T/A.
(Yikes, I just noticed your sig. The front end of LT-1 T/A was downright pretty....Needless to say, the restyling of the LS-1 T/A helped me decide on a Camaro.)

Hahaha , whatever floats ya man ;)
AronZ28 02-16-2005, 01:44 AM Maybe if you took a giant sledge to your Armada and beat that terrible curve out of the roof, along with a new front clip, and a new rear window that has four sides, MAYBE, just MAYBE your Armada wouldn't blind me with its ugliness

1. Trucks and SUVs are supposed to be "ugly."
2. If I was "image concious" would I also drive a Camaro?
3. Your issues of rage are probably connected with your economic situation.

1 very minor accident (some guy in truck with an attached snow plow decided stop signs didn't appy to him - buckled the hood on my beater) in 16 years driving here, 7.5 of them driving in Midwest winters in both hi-po RWD and crappy FWD cars.
What it comes down to is if people want OnStar as an option let them have it, but DONT f***ing force it on me.
AronZ28 02-16-2005, 12:17 PM I don't have any anger managment issues. I have problems with idiots, that's all.
PacerX 02-16-2005, 12:50 PM Ummm...
Minor point about OnStar...
OnStar can locate the vehicle automagically and pass along the info to the cops & paramedics & lawyers (who will probably get there before the cops do)... I'm not aware if it was done in this case, but it has been done previously in different situations. Little kids have called OnStar in emergencies and OnStar has located the vehicle.
One other thing OnStar needs...
1) Car is stolen.
2) Owner reports car is stolen.
3) OnStar locates car automagically.
4) If car is in motion, OnStar starts progressively shutting off fuel injectors. First one, then two, then three... until the car stops running while in gear and the thief pulls over... oddly enough, it idles and runs just fine in Park or Neutral... OnStar then turns a local Christian music station on full blast, turns the HVAC system up to "blast furnace", adjusts the seats all the way forward and up, turns on the wipers and starts flashing the interior lights on and off.
Maybe we could then have OnStar set off the airbags, just for giggles.
HEH.

I about fell out of my chair when I read that. My friend has a car that is like that too,(an old S-10 Jimmy).
Robert_Nashville 02-18-2005, 01:48 PM OnStar, like most technological advances has its good and bad points.
No doubt it adds convenience and can be a real help in an emergency but I’m just not sure I want ANYBODY to have to ability to know exactly where I am at any given moment. I sometimes don’t even take my cell phone with me when I leave the house (I’m sure that will bring a collective gasp from the audience). :D
As has been mentioned earlier in this thread, I’m not against the option of things like OnStar so long as they stay an option…I don’t want it forced down my throat; especially at my expense.
