04 GTO vs. 05 Gt

Had an incredible day today. The local dealer just got in a blue 04 GTO at a great price, so I went down to test drive it. Loved the car so I filled out a finance app. and let them appraise my z. The dealership let me drive the GTO for the afternoon while they were working on the numbers so I headed to our store to show the car to my wife. I got on the on-ramp to hwy 26 and noticed a white 05 Mustang GT with paper tags in front of me. No cars in front of him. The on ramp is roughly a half mile long before you have to merge, but the first 1/8 mile is a really tight S turn. He got on it at the beginning of the turn as did I. I stayed about 25 feet off his bumper through the turn (had no trouble staying with him) and when the road straightened we both hit it at about 35-40. I was in the top of 2nd and instantly pulled on him. Shifted to 3rd and pulled into the middle lane (he got the right one). By 70 I was 2 cars ahead. I slowed at about 85 when it looked like he gave up...probably about 3 cars back...maybe a little less. Awesome race and the GTO really impressed me all around. Nice car. Hopefully everything goes through tomorrow and she'll come home with me.

Thanks for reading
Jason

well i hope your not considering buying the car now that you drove the crap out of it.. im assuming that the car had few miles on it and gm recommends about 500-1000miles of normal (non-abuseive) driving before you do any competitive driving

Nice and hopefully welcome back to the Muscle car group. This is good news to hear, I put 4-5 cars on a 04 GTO from a 35 roll, so that means I am ahead of the new 05 Stangs. Great first kill on the car, it doesnt get any better than bagging a new mustang on the first time out.

Bah - who buys a car like that and waits 500-1500 miles to go WOT? I was adding mods with 500 miles on the clock.

Too bad the dealership won't be willing to give near what the Z would be worth to a private party. Still, they make make the numbers close enough that you can let it go just to be sitting in a new car this afternoon :)

well like any new car you need a break in period for not just the motor but the clutch also...

LOL.... It had 18k miles on it. I wouldn't have dogged out a new one....well, maybe:)

Bingo. They offered me $5k on my Z...finally got them up to $7k. Still a deal breaker though:( I know the car would sell privately for about $12k. I'm really in love with the GTO though. Guess it won't hurt to wait a few months till they drop in price some more then try again. For anyone in the market for a sports coupe, do yourself a favor and drive this car. Very impressive handling, power and ride. Build quality seemed above average for GM as well.

Thanks. I'm suprised you beat one so easily. Like I said in a different thread, the GTO I drove was noticably faster than my last Vette (in my sig). Do you know if the one you raced was a m6?

It was an Auto, but still I dont think it would have mattered a whole lot from a roll since we were both Auto's. At least I know I didnt win cause he missed a gear. Truth be told I thought I'd be even or be toast, but I was happy to see it didnt turn out that way. From a dig he said the only way he got traction was with his traction control. Enjoy the new GTO, its a great car and if I had money I'd dish some out for one. Funny thing with GTO owners they have those cars out and racing as soon as they get in, this GTO I raced has 30 day tags.

I have test driven both the auto and the manual, and that car is a ton faster with the 6spd. They are very nice cars and are extremely tempting since they can be had for $19-20k with 15000 miles on them.

I am not sure how they feel or what the gearing is, but in most runs I have seen M6's are only a tenth or so quicker, but then again I havent looked into it that extensively.

Aren't the A4 LS2 GTO's supposed to be faster than the M6's i'm pretty sure i read that somewhere???

I also read the 05 Auto's had better torque management that puts them a hair ahead. But I am not sure how credible the source was.

FYI new cars get beat on during PDI (pre delivery inspection) Its when the techs take them out to make sure everything is working. I work for chrysler and I know when I get something with a Hemi in it the pedal is to the floor and tires are spinning.

I don't know if I"d say that. Someone on the Legacy board did PDI and was fired when Subaru execs read a similar post from him...

The PDI thing isn't always true, thats really a variable from person to person. Mostly the abuse comes from retarded porters who think a 4 cyl corolla is zippy (this is true, couldn't make up a zippy corolla story). These kids just don't care what happens to these cars, its just too bad.
