Buddy claims 695 rwtq out of his Cummins

My bud has an '01 Dodge Cummins turbo diesel truck. He said the previous owner put a chip in it and it puts out 695 rwtq! Is that possible with only a chip? What are the stock ratings of this motor? I was thinking something like 270 hp and 520 tq. How fast are these Ford, Chevy, and Dodge turbo diesel trucks with only a chip and exhaust? As fast as my car? We will probably run in April.

A have an issue of TruckTrend (don't feel like digging it out now though) where they had a Big 3 diesel shootout.

They dynoed all brands and the Ram which I believe was rated at 245HP/505 FT-LBS. layed down 180HP and 604 FT-LBS. on the dyno.

Dodge definitely underrated it in the TQ department, so your friend is probably correct.

An exhaust and chip on a cummins will up the horse around 50-100 extra. If his truck isn't four wheel drive i wouldn't worry because he will spinn untill 3rd or 4th gear with all the touque he has. I wouldn't worry though because my dad has a 01 cummins ... stock but its not that fast. Some guy on here has a duramax with 463 rwhp and 801 rwtq and he said it will put 4 carlenghts on his stock lt1 ta... so the cummins has about 275-325 rwhp. I dunno im just rammbling.

695 rwtq wouldn't suprise me one bit. Diesels are torque monsters to say the least. I don't know how fast it would be though. Probably be able to give you quite a scare though.

Today's diesels are well capable of that. Most of your garden-variety chips will add about 100rwhp and 200+rwtq to a bone stock truck on their highest settings. Add in a larger DP and exhaust, propane, and increase the boost more and you're looking at a "bolt-on" diesel making well over 800lb-ft to the wheels. I have a video of a crew-cab dodge dually (well, the rear tires have been replaced with a big single slick on each side) blowing an 03 cobra off the track. The cobra ran a 12.4_ to the dodge's 10.9_. Not bad for a 6k+ lb truck. For racing, the 12V cummins has proven itself at the most potent since they can handle a lot more boost than their counterparts. Even the 24V cummins. But the 6.0 powerstroke is starting to gain momentum in the diesel "racing" world. Their 4V heads and high rpm potential is drawing a lot of attention.

Check out the diesel forums on the net. "the diesel stop", "the diesel register", and "diesel central" are the first ones i can think of. There's also a host of other forums for the powerstroke, cummins, detroit, duramax, etc on an individual basis.

Scary thing is, most of the times those hp-po chips actually give better fuel milege too. A CAI, larger DP, and exhaust also increase milege. Imagine a crew-cab 4x4 diesel with 400rwhp and 800rwtq getting 23+mpg on the highway  It happens all the time with those who know what they're doing.

They can make a ton of power real easily...I wouldnt be surprised

My brother has a twin turbo setup on his dodge Cummins. I don't know how much hp he has but it ran a 13.2 in a 1 ton dually 4 wheel drive. He has it in a 3/4 ton now. Now traction is the biggest problem.

Do you remember how much rwhp and rwtq the Ford and Chevy put out?

Steve.... the diesels have changed so much in the last 4-5 years that it's hard to summarize it all. I just got out a sheet of paper and took notes as i lurked on those forums, doing lots of searches. A few hours of that and you'll get up to date. Paste the names above in yahoo and it'll give you the URLs to the forums.

Today's diesels are nothing short of amazing. The technology has exploded since the early 90's. When i get my truck one day, it's gonna be an all-out crewcab 4x4 diesel (99% sure it's gonna be a F-250 6.0L ;) ). Not to mention the 600k+ mile expected service life. My uncle has a 97 or 98 3500 dodge reg cab/2wd/dually cummins and he just rocked 750k miles last fall.... at least 550-600k of that pulling a gooseneck trailer with cotton gin bins between SC and AL. Been through 6 or 7 transmissions like dodges are known for, but the cummins is solid. Then a buddy of mine's father owns a crab business up in balitmore, has 3 mid-90's F-250s with powerstrokes, all with over 400k miles and running like new. Those truck's entire life were with big refrigerator cabs in the back carrying at least 2-3000 lbs of seafood everywhere. Even the trannies were shifting good which suprises me. I wouldn't be afraid to buy a cummins or a powerstroke, but the d-maxers are having a good many issues. The 7.3 powerstrokes are solid, the 6.0s had some teething problems with injectors their first year but are good to go now, and the cummins have a problem with the trucks and transmissions falling apart around them

On a side note: I'd really love to see one of the big three, preferribly ford, drop a CAT diesel in the full-size line up. Caterpillar has a diesel right now that'll fit in.... it's 6.(something) liters and makes about 250hp stock. But what's amazing is that it makes 800 lb-ft of torque...with 90% of it coming right off idle and peaking at around 1600rpm. Think about upping the boost on that bad boy... talk about a towing beast

How in the world does the Silverado run a whole second faster with that much less torque then the Dodge. Anywho, go Duramax!!!

I burn rice too

Those numbers have changed alot since 2000. Ford and Dodge are running alot more and G.M. has added 10 more h.p. for 05. G.M. tried to put the Cat in before the Duramax, but it would just twist the frame. Now that's torque. Dodge is supposed to start using the Mecedes engine, with rumors that Ford may be switching to the Cat. I would expect to see more of these at the track. That and no emissions in California.
