kandied91z 01-27-2005, 09:36 PM i have a 91 z28 vert that was converted to speed density with the dash, wiring and all with a 145 setup out of a 5.7 car. what all would i need in the wiring department to make a 01 ss 4l60e drivetrain and cpu work?
would it be possible to make the guages work like they do? apologize with the repeat questions if it is but with thirdgen down it's rather hard to look up ls1 swap details.
thanks.
:)
kandied91z 01-28-2005, 01:01 AM so there is nothing different then a standard swap? anyone recommend one adapter over another?
would the harness from howell engineering be better then using an adapter?
FruityOne 01-28-2005, 01:44 AM Jeff, do you mean with the LS1 engine too? Or just the transmission? I wish I could help you, never considered using a 4L60E transmission without the accompanying motor.
kandied91z 01-28-2005, 01:46 AM oh no, yes i mean the complete setup. i would like to use the original 145 guage cluster just want to know what adapter i should use or just pick up the howell harness which overrides it all.
JSkeet 01-28-2005, 02:49 AM dude, if you've got the money/time to do the swap, get a 4th gen dash and go all out!!!
Chrome383Z 01-28-2005, 03:36 PM I personally like the look of a clean factory interior. Not hacked up w/ a 4th gen interior (not meant to offend, just my personal opinion).
camaroz28racer2 01-28-2005, 03:54 PM You'll need an interface for the tach signal as it is different, both speedometers use a 4000 pulse / mi input.
kandied91z 01-28-2005, 04:00 PM i agree on the interior and i've noticed what your saying about the tach problems. are there any other signal areas besides that and the engine temp?
NastyTA 01-28-2005, 09:41 PM send your factory harness to Hawks, they do the modifications to it that make the LS1 swap a plug and play deal. It's like $650 to do it and all of your gauges will work. You'll only need an interface box for the tach. The LS1 tach uses a 4cyl signal to operate while the thirdgen tach uses a v8 signal (which makes sense)

Thats $650 that will be down the drain, the diagrams and a little solder / heat shrink would be a far better idea.
kandied91z 01-30-2005, 03:13 AM sounds like maybe you should open up a business then eh?
thanks for the links and suggestions everyone!
:)
97WS6SCharged 01-30-2005, 05:54 AM Have you thought about maybe using aftermarket gauges in the stock locations?
kandied91z 01-30-2005, 05:35 PM i have but i really like the 91 dash. if i were going to go that far i'll completely build my own dash. good idea i'm just not ready to part with the dash yet.

This would be a good way to make some side money ;)
Not sure how much your time is worth, but when I did the LS1 swap on one of my customers cars he said he'd rather pay for the $650 conversion than pay me $80/hour for me to splice it in.
Kanidied: There's no doubt in my mind that it can be done at home like he said, but if you're in a hurry it's easier to send it out and have someone do it that's done it before.

Actually, welcome to thirdgenparts.com ;) we normally do used 3rd / 4th gen parts, and im sure jeff knows we've been around for a while. I've been doing swaps in thirdgens since I was 16, in the past I really didnt have the time to be able to put into doing this for people, and the one harness I did for someone took a lot longer than it should have due to work bouncing me around and changing my schedule quite a bit, though he was very happy when he received his plug in 92 Camaro LT1 harness.
For now i've got a few customers swaps im working on, along with a replacement for the LT1 T56 thirdgen i traded for my heritage, so unless jeff wants to drop it off here in tampa for me to do the engine install, I probably wont be fortunate enough to get his business. But some others may have it a bit easier in the future :)
kandied91z 02-01-2005, 01:58 PM if it's worth the trip i'll trailer it.. i'm surrounded in snow anyhow.
:D

It probably would be right now :D
camaroz28racer2 02-01-2005, 02:56 PM And on a subject not relevant to the post.
What color engine bay have you decided upon Jeff ? The black or Body color.
*crosses fingers for body color*
kandied91z 02-01-2005, 07:14 PM yes body color... couldn't work in the black finish and pull it together the way I want to. I am carrying the ghost effects throughout the bay though in certain areas but it will be very subtle. can't tell the colors yet as that isn't set.
