53 degrees, low humidity, 14.2's @ 99mph ...

i have a 1999 Camaro SS, only mods are lid and a cutout.

last night it was about 53 degrees, low humidity, but yet i still couldn't pull better than a 2.2 60 foot even without spinning much :(

best run of the night was a 13.9 @ 101mph, followed by a 14.2 @ 99mph. this was happening as people all around me were pulling new bests :(

the car FEELS fine as far as i can tell, fuel filter was replaced about 6 months ago, spark plugs changed about 4 months ago.

what could be wrong? i'm hopefully going to have it on the dyno saturday morning so i guess that'll say for sure if there is a problem or not, but i already suspect there is :(

Some cars just run better than others. I have a buddy with an 00 SS A4 and it ran 13.9@100. Nothing is wrong with it, just doesn't put out good times. I have also heard that the torque management settings in some A4 cars can hurt times.

well when i first purchased the car about 8 months ago i pulled a 13.6 @ 105mph with like a 2.1 60 foot.

about a month ago it pulled a 13.6 @ 101

then last night it pulled a 14.2 @ 99 :( and that was the coldest night of all.

Well thats a low 13 w/ a good 60 so your car defintaly runs LS1 times...I wouldnt be too concerned ..we all have bad days

Anasazi, I think YOUR times have to do with two things.

1. The Track

- I've only run at OSW once and I the best I did was 14.4 twice and 14.0@102 with just a muffler and having NEVER raced before. Since I've moved and go to BMP now, the second pass I made there I instantly ran a 13.5@105 and a new best in my sig. back in December. I just assume the track is better, but I have improved at racing. Try leaving the line at 1,000-1,100 RPM.

2. Your car's computer

- I go to a GM Master Tech. who's very good and says that your car's computer will adjust its power output based on your driving habits and takes about a week to change habits. This means that if you constantly go WOT 10 times per day and then go to the track, your car will be faster than if you drive 45 MPH every day and then go to the track.

I bet your inconsistent times have to do with one (or both) of these two things.

I leave at 1500 rpm's, thats w/ both times in sig! ;)

track conditions can kill 60 foot times.... if a good track.. can get much better

Here at MOroso, I think they take good care, but last wednesday, 5:45-10:45, 3 runs!!

Guys, he ran a 105 at the same track in probably much worse weather (April-ish in FL is not good). Now he's running 99-101 in better weather...something is definitely not right.

anasazi, you haven't really mentioned any other problems (maybe everything else is fine?)...so I have no idea what could be wrong.

My first guesses though would be fuel filter, plugs, wires, or O2s...

Moroso's track prep usually sucks on T&T nights but it has gotten better over the past year or so.

I'm in west FL. I just checked your site, nice car man.

What does my sig. look close to?

yea early april is when i first ran in humidity you could cut with a knife and very high temperatures (like 85 - 90 degrees) and it ran a 13.6 @ 105 ... this was with nothing but a lid.

about 2 months ago i ran a 13.6 @ 101'ish, decent temperatures, decent humidity. this was my first shock because this was WITH the cutout open, and i dropped like 4mph.

and now last wednesday i ran a 14.2 @ 99mph in COLD (53 degree) temps and low humidity, cutout open. this was while many many people around me were running new personal bests.

the car has 53,000 miles on it. i baught the car in April and changed all fluids and filters at that time (43,000 miles), and have changed spark plugs twice since i purchased it. my plugs are NKG TR55's, and i checked the gaps.

the SES light has not come on since i purchased the car (other than during startup when all lights come on), so i don't think its throwing any codes.

possibly o2's? maybe i got a really bad batch of gas and my fuel filter is clogged?

i'd check your sparkplugs again. you could be running on 7 cyclinders and not realize it.

if that doesnt resolver anything, do a leak down and compression check to make sure a piston ring didnt ive up the ghost. and keep us posted!

good luck. :)

did a cylinder balance test and they were all within 1% of eachother so i'm definantly running on all 8

too many variables and not enough info to even begin to say if anything is out of line/wrong.
an extra .1 on the 60' often equals an extra .2 on the ET
what was your 1/8th time?
same tires with 9 months of wear since April?
street tires?(remember heating street tires is a waste of time and tire)
colder temps make for colder track and less traction
track prep plays a factor
there is probably nothing wrong, just had a less than perfect day at the track.

hell be happy you can get to a drag strip, here is what our local track looks like right now

went and dyno'ed 290rwhp and 300wrtq with the cutout closed.

air/fuel ratio was 12.0 and FLAT all the way up to redline.

same tires, yes. they're getting near the end of their life.

maybe drag radial time?

I don't know if this is fact or just a story - but one individual told me once that when he opened up his cutout it put his car too lean and ran worse times than when it was closed. - dont know could just be malarkey!

Did you add weight (stereo equipment & Such) to the car after the 105mph runs.
That would worsen times.
