Re: Mercedes SL65

That footage is from the most recent GA 3000GT/Stealth/DSM track day ( http://importshowdown.com ) The weather was about 80 degrees with 98+ humidity. Imagine - it could have gone faster!

Actually, I don't think anybody went faster than the Mercedes did. The blue Stealth in his video ended up running 11.9 @ 122 so it could have been close. There was a BPU automatic Supra on drag radials also doing high 11s at around 117.

I miss the old days.... when you had to know something about cars to make them go fast.

Now, any moron with a good sized checkbook can walk up to a dealer and buy a new car that can go faster than my Z will probably ever go

$190,000 to be exact. What car wouldn't run 11s after almost $200k?

$190K !?!? I don't feel so bad then.

If I had that kind of coin, I could pay off my mortgage and build my Z to go 10's......

It's really not much different. The same question, "How fast/quick can I go?" has the same answer, "How much money do you have to spend?"

For instance, you can make a very fast and quick car for a relatively small amount of money if you start with an inexpensive Fox body Mustang. Another route that I've read about is a Dodge Omni Turbo. Find one cheap and you can be in the 12s or faster for just a few thousand dollars.

My point exactly - some who know something about cars can get either of these cars into the 12's. The guy who owns the Merc just plopped down his checkbook, and is still quicker. I know that money will almost always win out - just keep throwing money at the problem and the speed will come. Look at Penske, when he built that one-off "stock block" engine for Indy - and blew away the field....

I guess what I am getting at is that more and more "production" cars are coming with HP numbers that would embarass a 10 year old Corvette or Porsche. Three hundred HP is almost a benchmark for a sports car, where it used to be reserved for exotics - even SUV's and family sedans today have that kind of power. The Merc V-12 twin turbo is at 600+ hp and 700+ ft lbs , the new M5 is going to be a 500 hp V-10 - where is it going to end?

Re: Mercedes SL65

link is toast. =(

funny thread, though. i doubt very seriously a person that buys a sl65 is gonna be interested in a souped-up fox body or, for god's sake, an omni turbo. that kind of logic always baffles me.
