1996 camaro with 3.8 v6 5 speed.(Friends car)

After car gets warm I can press the gas to the floor and it will only go to around 3k and spits and sputters. But it will idle good and run good when it is cold. We have changed the throttle control sensor and 02 sensor and still same results. The service light is on but the only code showing was the 02 sensor and that has been changed. The fuel filter has been changed.

When car gets warm and i'm driving and I press down on the gas it will rev up and then go back down over and over as if I'm pressing and releasing on the gas but I'm not. If I let off the gas while driving it just spits and sputters. Any help would be great..as I'm at a loss

Thanks for your time..

have you checked the coil? i had a similar problem on my 1989 oldsmobile which also had the 3800 V6. the coil was on its way out, so it would hesitate, and sputter. replaced that, wires and plugs, and it was fine. car is still running pretty strong with 188K on it right now. good luck.

 Yes he had the coil checked he said it or they was pretty dirty but the guy said they were all within specs. It just seems to run real rich at times. sometimes won'e even start unless he let's it sit for over 2 hours.

it's probibly the plugs and wires

Look at the stickey in this section under "missfire" or something like that.

My car had similar problem, wires/plugs fixed it.

I had a problem a lil similar to this one.. i have a 96 3800II... automatic

my problem is this... the car will sometimes not start.. was very rare at first .. then it got to about every few days id have a problem.. but all I would have to do is keep trying to start it.. it would turn but not start.. and then it would eventually start... once the car was on it was fine...

then eventually .. while driving i would notice when i would put into the gas.. it would feel like the car wanted to under-rev.. like i would push the pedal but it felt sluggish.. a few times the car stalled out on me while idling (mind you again my car is auto).. this seemed to be even more common if the AC was on.. ONCE it even stalle dout while i was going down a slope (wasnt pushing the gas) .. all in all the car was a bit sluggish, can tell the power isnt the same.

Took it to the mech. got my radiator and my starter replaced... she starts beautifully now.. he says i still need valve coverf gaskets and im leaking a bit of oil...

got the car back as i said it starts fine.. but the other day I was told by my step father not to drive it because he got in it and it would barely drive..

think I should try the plugs or anyone know what I should do here? thank you for your help sorry for the long post :P

also shes got 131k on her fyi

also.. :P ... idle would sometimes be a lil rough and sometimes the service engine light would come on.. then like a mile down the road.. turn off.. or it would be on when i turn the car on.. then turn off after a bit. but all the the problems were not constant.. the car would run ****ty then run like a stallion so .. ive got nfc what the deal is. thanks again

I had the exact same problems once with a 92 v8 camaro.. I replaced coil, ignition, plugs wires filters etc... turned out I needed a whole new distributer..... which is what I would recommend replacing .... it would run fine then like crap then stall then start a while later. eventually it wouldnt MOVE at all but would idle roughly with the service engine soon light on. I had the distributer replaced and didnt have any problems since / I'm betting that's what the problem is.. keep us posted !! I

I had a similar problem and then about a week later my coil burned up. Sure was fun driving home on 4cyl. Might want to check the plugs and wires too.

Ok guys thanks for all the help you have no idea how frustrating it's been. My budy took his car in to the shop they charged him $115.51 to put it on somekind of computer and find the problem. He has a small leak on his water pump and was leaking down and getting the crank sensor wet and threw off the timing.. I think that is a little high just to find out the problem but he just tried everyting and has to get it fixed. Again thanks for all the help..
