nightwave 12-22-2004, 02:44 PM I apologize in advance for covering any ground that's already been covered. I've seen topics around that talk about upgrading the LT1 Z28 brakes to LS1 Z28 brakes, and was curious what it would take and how much it would cost. I've got a '94 Z with the stock brakes. This is kind of in response to a problem I've got.
I keep hearing squealing coming from the left side of the car whenever I make a left turn (and I've tried not turning left, it doesn't work :p ). I've had the car since March 8, 2004, and I've reason to believe that a couple of the previous owners drove it hard. I've had the squealing happen before, and it turns out the rear caliper had locked up on me, and the pad was sliding down the rotor. I think it's happened again.
I was wondering if there were any web sites that would walk someone through the upgrade, and how hard it would be to do it myself. I've never done anything mechanical to any car aside from change the oil. Any help would be greatly welcomed.
I bow to your superior knowledge  .

DiabloGT 12-24-2004, 02:34 PM are those instructions only for the front brakes? what about rear?
Bryan Smith 12-24-2004, 11:04 PM Rear isnt worth it. Just do the fronts.
96SilverRam 12-24-2004, 11:49 PM Directions for front.....
97SLPcamaroSS 12-25-2004, 01:15 AM I did the front up grade and love everyting about it well worth the money. Its stright froward up grade you need everying between the upper and lower control arms even brake hoses. Dont try to make new hard lines just bend the old ones and fab up some new brackts to hold them. only took about 2 hr but im a Gm mechanic. but still very easy.
gt_biker13 12-26-2004, 12:19 AM Instead of making a new thrred, ill ask here. Ill probly do the LS1 brakes up front, but i need new rotors, calipers and that for the rear also, are there LS1 kits for that too? And wheres a good place to buy these, i cant seem to find any on ebay.
5.0THIS 12-26-2004, 01:55 AM On the rear, there's alot more too it than switching calipers and/or rotors. The actual brake setup on the rear of an LS1 will perform similarly if not identically to an LT1 setup. Where the LS1 setup is indeed much better is the parking brake setup. The LT1 utilizes a cable to operate the caliper and squeeze the disc, while the LS1 setup has the "drum within the disc", or a small miniature drum brake in the hat of the rotor, which is the parking brake. I think you have to switch to LS1 brake backing plates, and possibly LS1 axles as well. It isnt terribly straightforward.
Severous01 12-26-2004, 08:51 PM if you want to do the backs, it's probably more feasable to get an entire axle...you can upgrade the gearing to 3.42 :D if you have an auto, then there would be no tire you couldnt roast :o
i'm not familiar with swapping the rears out, but you'll need backing plates, pads, rotors, calipers, i think that's it. but there's work in removing the backing plates.
bruecksteve 12-27-2004, 10:11 AM It's not worth doing the rear brakes, spend the money on the front and get something good.
jz3082 12-28-2004, 07:45 PM i just did this upgrade it was real easy but now i have an air bubble in the brake lines and no matter what i try i can't get it out so i can't drive the car. Anyone have any ideas on how to get the air out of there?
Severous01 12-30-2004, 04:28 AM did you put the calipers on the right sides? check and make sure the bleeder valve is at the top of the caliper...it's been done so dont think you're the only one. ;)
did you get new lines?
