Confused About Rear Ends

I plan on running 700+rwhp in the fuure and I want a rear end that will be able to handle it. However, this will not be a strip car. 99% of the time the car will be driven on streets with an occasional 1/4 mile run via a Tazzo VPC out on some back country road. I plan on running a turbo 400 tranny and some pretty sticky tires with it like the ET streets or similar.

My concern is with the searches I've done before this thread. I've seen reports of people breaking their 12 bolts with 11.90 passes at the track! I am confused because I thought these things were bullet proof. Also, how do I tell if my car has traction control? Is there a button that is supposed to say it on it? What about ABS? I would think my car would have it but every time I get on the breaks hard all you hear is tires screeching due to them locking up. Sorry for the "20 questions" but I need to get this figured out. Thanks,
FLeX

Re: Confused About Rear Ends

If you are planning on over 700 rwhp running mainly on the street I would probably just go with a 9" with a posi. Most of the guys you hear breaking 12 bolts though are M6 cars with harsh hitting clutches like the ST launching over 5k with slicks. A 12bolt may work ok for you though since it would be behind an auto and run mainly on the street, either a 9" or 12 bolt should be fine. I thought all LT1 cars came with ABS standard, if you dont have a traction control button you probably dont have it. Also a TCS car has the large TCS control unit on the driver side valve cover I beleive. Not sure what a Tazzo VPC is BTW.

Re: Confused About Rear Ends

Thanks for the response. The reason I ask about the ABS is because (1) there is no pulse in the pedal under hard braking and (2) my tires lock up and leave nice black marks on the street. There is no traction control button or anything on the valve cover so I don't think I have it. The Tazzo VPC is the competitor(sp?) to the G-Tech Pro. I guess it measures your 60 ft., 1/4 mile time, MPH, etc. but the MPH is always 4 or 5 too high. The times are within 1/10 though so as long as I subtract 5 MPH I should have a number very close to what I would get at my nearest track which is 200 miles away. What 9" rear should I get? I've heard of the Ford and Moser units but what options do I have? Thanks again.

Re: Confused About Rear Ends

I had a Moser 9", I just traded it with a guy here for his Moser 12 bolt. I picked the 9" up used and it was a bit overkill for my setup. It had 35 spline axles and a detroit locker. Moser seems to be the most popular maker for our cars, weather its 9" or 12bolt. The guy I traded it to was planning on over 600rwhp with an M6 and Im sure that rear would hold it no problem. When you say Ford or Moser, "Ford" really isnt a choice of rear manufacturers for our car, Moser's rear and others like Strange are just a Ford 9" "design". Ford doesnt specificaly make a rear for our cars, just Moser and others basically modify 9" rears for them to work on ours.
