Fuel pump replacement question

Anybody who dropped their gas tank to do the fuel pump replacement, how did you check for leaks (other than the obvious of looking for gas spilling out the connections) on the sending unit on top of the tank after it is installed? I don't want to do the access panel and I'm waiting for my glue to set up on my bucket before I reinstall. Since my Racetronix pump came with no directions how long do most people wait for the glue to dry before reinstall?

I did email Racetronix for install instructions but my mail kept getting bounced back. I finally completed the install after 12 hours of hell. The pump works but now the gas guage reads 1/2 full after I topped off the tank with gas, I suppose I screwed something up in the sending unit during the install, I barely had room to get the sending unit out and in. I need time to cool off a bit before I drop the tank again and see whats wrong, maybe I'll do the access panel this time or cut the filler neck on the tank and put on a rubber coupler so it drops all the way out this time! Anybodys input would be appreciated.

before you drop the tank again, I would recomend that you drive it around and use most of the tank of gas and then fill it all the way up again. The float may be stuck, and will free itself with the movement from driving and the fuel level going down and back up. When I put mine back together, the gauge was pegged at empty even though there were a few gallons in the tank (it showed almost 1/8 tank before the install) I drove it a couple of miles with the gauge stuck, but after I filled it up it started working and has been fine since.

BTW: My Racetronix kit didnt come with any instructions either???

Thanks for stopping me magnum, maybe I might get lucky and the float will unstick itself? I know the sending unit worked before I put it in because I checked the ohms with a multimeter by moving the float up and down. It read around 90 at full and decreased to .5 ohms at empty position. Also the gas guage worked before I took it out. I searched some other posts where most peoples fuel guage reads past full position and runs empty at 1/2 full on the guage.
When you put your sending unit in did it feel like the bottom of it was rubbing on the bottom of the tank? I twisted, wiggled and adjusted mine for atleast 10 minutes till I gave up and just bolted it down. Before I ramble on too much, how far down could you get your tank to easily remove the sending unit? I struggled for ever getting mine out finally pulling down on the tank with one hand and twisting and removing the sending unit with the other hand which put alot of flex on the filler neck!

I took the tank all the way out. It wasnt easy, but I just twisted and wiggled it until it came out.

I would cut an access hole. Wether or not you plan to drop the tank for cleaning that is up to you, but its nice to have the access hole if you need to get to the pump in a hurry. What happened to me is i had 3/4 of a tank of gas in the car before i started the project and when i got it all assembled the gauge only read 1/2. WTF? So i drove to the gas station and put in $5 and it didn't move at all. I drove home and took the access door off and pulled the pump out. My problem was the flexible clear plastic tube was in the way and the float was catching on it. When i put the float on i moved it up and down but i didn't know how far it needed to travel to be full though. So i moved my hose out of the way slapped the pump back in, and the gauge read right. If i had to guess you did the same. :(

what clear hoses? i just put another sending unit in cause i thought my sending unit was screwed cause the gas guage needle was stuck at full!!!

so i tested out the new one b4 i put it in and i moved the floater up and down and it worked!!

Put the other sending unit in i got and the needle is still stuck at full!!

what is the deal here?

I siphoned 7 gallons from the tank and watched the gauge go from 1/2 full (with a full tank to begin with) to empty. Then I drove around pretty hard to swish the gas around in the tank like magnumv8 did. I then filled the tank to full and the gauge only pegs alittle over 1/2 full again so maybe the float rod is sticking on the pump hose. I'm storing the car for winter now so I'll have some time to decide on dropping the tank again. Can I buy a new sending unit without the pump and if so how much do they cost?

btw magnum: when you dropped your tank did someone help you guide the filler neck out or did you remove your rearend to gain clearance?

see i have mine cut on the top of the fuel pump, so i jsut do it from the hatch!!!

lol takes like 5 min to get the full assembly out!!

The OEM pumps and Racetronix pumps have a clear flexible hose that is ribbed. It actually looks about like one of those big clear flexible straws you can get at some places. I see you have an aftermarket pump so you probably don't have one. Its the tube that goes from the pump up to the top of the mounting plate.

Improperly positioned flex tube or wires.
Bad level senders are not uncommon either.

I had the rear end out because I did the fuel pump while I was putting in the 12 bolt.

It sounds like your float is hanging up on the wires or hose, as others have said. I guess you will have to pull the unit and re-install to make sure it isnt sticking.
