From Auto News:

The Chrysler group's revival of the Charger name on a Dodge sedan is generating "hate mail," says a senior executive. Production of the 2006 model starts in January, but correspondence is voluminous opposing the name on a four-door, says Trevor Creed, Chrysler senior vice president of design.

If the exec is saying this publicly, I bet they are seriously thinking about a name change.

As if they couldn't see that one coming...

Just call the damn thing Magnum...why does the wagon and the four door need a different name? Call the coupe the Charger if you want...leave the sedan alone...

Why call it Charger at all?
I would like to see the Chevy Zeta cars just all be called Chevelle. Have a 4dr Chevelle sedan, 2dr Chevelle coupe, and a 5dr Chevelle wagon.

It's good to see that even the Hemi marketing machine can't mask the fact that a Charger does not and should not have 4 doors. :thumb:

Could be worse. They could have put the charger name on an updated FWD V6 Intrepid... like some manufactorers do.

Why not call the sedan a Challenger? Leave the Charger name for a coupe.

Or they could put it on a front wheel drive four...oh, wait, they already did that.

Nobody wants to buy a car named after a spaceship that blew up ;) :D

Because the Challenger was a TWO door pony car.....(then a 2 door japanese aborition).....

Call it a MAGNUM sedan because THAT'S WHAT IT IS. :alert:

Or a Dodge 300 :P Cause it's that too.

Polara? Monaco? What other Dodge Sedans were there? And I'd say it'd be unwise to give it a Plymouth nameplate... cause then we all know where they'd try to go.

I agree. A Magnum sedan. That's what it is.

That's what I've been thinking, too.

So, putting the name on a sedan which will have at least an available V8 engine, is not that bad, IMO.

Does not look bad for a 4 door I guess.I wonder how much they want to sell it for?

Being as the Magnum is the Wagon version, figure 1-2k less than a similarly equipped Magnum. I wager the Charger RT will come Hemi equipped for high 20's.

Hmmm...wonder if Chevy is getting any "hate mail" for plastering "SS" badges on 4 banger econoboxes?

One would think but they are rumoring the R/T version will be in the 30s like the 300C. Makes no sense but that's what the rumors are right now. If that's true DCx just killed this car before it came out. Nobody will buy a bastardized Charger that costs just as much as the better looking 300C.
The only way this thing will be successful is if it's cheaper than the Magnum and 300 or is significantly faster than either of them for the same price. Otherwise...it's going to die a slow painful death.

Magnum RT seems more appropriate. Either way, it is a lot of hooplah for a car that no one has seen a concrete photo of without bodycladding.

Name it Enforcer or something.......haha I say this is far fetched but wouldn't it be funny if Dodge released the 4 door "charger" to get people so out of wack and then come around at NAIAS and have a nice looking 2 door Charger and the real name for the 4 door Charger is Enforcer...........

Yeah it's far fetched, and yes I believe that this Charger should be named something else but I would like to seea Charger return.

It could be a LOT worse...anybody remember this jewel (http://memimage.cardomain.net/member_images/10/web/502000-502999/502165_2_full.jpg) from Dodge (errr...Mitsubishi) named "Challenger"?

If its going to weigh over two tons, I'd rather get the SRT-8 300C myself.

Found this while looking up more info on the Charger:

Still, it appears the real hot rod on this platform will wear Chrysler badges. Unveiled in August at the Monterey Historic Automobile Races, the Chrysler 300C SRT-8 will get a new 6.1-liter version of the Hemi V-8, generating 425 horsepower and 420 pound-feet of torque. With the extra muscle come a firmer suspension and more aggressive rubber—hallmarks of an SRT treatment.

Lest we forget the Charger from the 1980's :o

After the disappointing GTO, I'll just not get my hopes up again with model names. ;)

The SRT8 Charger will have more power out of the same 6.1L HEMI then the 300C SRT8 has.

That's crazy,it's not like it's the name Camaro or Firebird or mustang, names that's been relevent for at least 40 years or a name that offered some kind of continuity for a long stretch of time. IMO,the Charger was only "right" from '68-70. '66-67 was a Dodge Marlin and the '71-whatever was a bloated looking neutered personal coupe-type car like a T-bird or Monte Carlo, sure the Marlin-charger and the early bloated chargers offered hot engines, but they were still awkward looking and hardly as popular as the coke bottle chargers,Not to mention those FWD chargers, the shelbys were neat but cult cars at best. 3 years does not make a car,if the Charger had been in continuing production for 40 years, like a mustang or 35 years like a F-body....and THEN,dodge makes it a 4-door,then i'd personally start the hate mail myself.
The Charger name has no continuity, like the T-bird and Cougar names, besides, like Carroll Shelby always said,if the car is great, the name won't matter and if the car is bad,the name won't save it.
Any of this ridiculous hate mail needs to be directed to the makers of the Dukes of Hazzard TV show and the upcoming movie  . The producers of that crap have done more to to destroy chargers than Dodge did or will ever do,i don't care if it's only V6 or 318 chargers or junkers,Dukes of Hazzard should be at the top of any hate list any car lover has for the incredible amount of cars destroyed for an incredibly horrible show....and the movie will destroy more, where's the uproar over that??
If it's awesome,4 doors or not,who cares?? I'd drive it,they didn't make 4-door 300 letter cars and you see how well that new car is doing,c'mon dodge, show some backbone and keep the name!!

The Charger is one of the top 5 cars that people reconize(sp?). I don't think it is another T-bird or Cougar. When you say HEMI most people say Charger. The names go together. Sure the car hasn't been around as long as the Camaro, Mustang, Corvette, or Firebird, but it is a well know name out of Detroit. Probably Chrysler's most know car name they have.
