bowtiethunder 11-27-2004, 01:30 AM I need help in selecting 10" sub and amp for my car. I already know I be getting the MTX T Form box or something similar. But I would like to upgrade to better stuff than what they offer as package. The two subs I have in mind are MTX Thunder5500 and Kicker CompVR. Anyone recommend anything different. I have no idea on what amp to get. This stuff is all confusing to me. I'm not looking to spend a lot of money either.
LS1 RULZ 11-27-2004, 11:23 PM I have a 10" Alpine Type-S that will work great in a Stealthbox style subwoofer enclosure. It's got dual 4ohm VC's that would make it an ideal sub for a Class-D subwoofer amp running at 2ohms. I just upgraded to dual subwoofers in my car so I had to get 2 dual 2ohm versions.
Lions3 11-28-2004, 03:08 PM What are you after? SPL, SQ, SQL?
What's your budget?
95firechicken 11-28-2004, 03:51 PM just to remind my self what are the actual definitions of spl, sq, sql?
97FormulaWS-6 11-28-2004, 06:40 PM SPL - Sound Pressure Level - Basicall how loud can you get, with no regards to musical reproduction or clarity
SQ - Sound Quality - How cleanly, clearly, & accurately can you reproduce the sound and have it sound "right"
SQL - Sound Quality Loud - How Loud can you get while still keeping the SQ of the music being reproduced.
Most people are either SQ or SPL, most equipment only can lend itself to one or the other depending on the install.
SQL is a new term that came about when the new "Super" subs started being manufactured by multiple manufacturers that could reproduce music with extreme clarity, accuracy, and cleanliness while still being able to get loud. Ex: JL W7, Adire Brahma, RE XXX. NONE of these subs are what is to be considered entry-level equipment and is typically only used with people who either have too much $$ or really know what they are doing and how to use the driver appropriately.
95firechicken 11-28-2004, 06:49 PM i havent found a link to the rexxx subs yet?
97FormulaWS-6 11-28-2004, 06:56 PM www.respl.com
95firechicken 11-28-2004, 08:02 PM link didnt work
97FormulaWS-6 11-28-2004, 08:09 PM hmmm, I know they were changing their address, I wonder if they did...
Yup, they did...
http://www.reaudio.com/
sorry, old link..
95firechicken 11-28-2004, 08:25 PM that one worked, but i noticed they have no prices? that and damn 1600wrms for a 12" is sicking
97FormulaWS-6 11-28-2004, 09:26 PM That is a thermal limit though, they rate speakers like this at the thermal failure point, basically the wattage you can feed the speaker before you melt the varnish on the voice-coil wires.
The actual wattage that you will be able the feed the driver is driven by the enclosure that it is installed in. A small enclosure you can feed that much power in and everything is fine, but a large sealed or ported enclosure you may only need 700Wrms before you reach Xmax of the speaker and begin damaging the speaker.
95firechicken 11-28-2004, 09:31 PM so how dou you figure the rms's out in turn with the enclosure size
97FormulaWS-6 11-28-2004, 10:05 PM Honestly, I've always done it with doing a best guess, slightly over-powered, and then just adjust the gains properly when tuning the system.
For any large or ported box I would just buy a 1kWrms amp and tune the gains, this creates less stress on the amp as well Vs running it at full-power.
95firechicken 11-29-2004, 06:08 AM sounds simple enough
Lions3 11-29-2004, 11:30 PM My setup for SQL:
(2) x JL 8W7's
(2) x JL 500/1
(1) x JL 300/2
(1) x CDT EFCFi-61
(1) x Clarion DRZ9255
This was my once in a lifetime, cost no object system. Am I happy? **** yes.
95firechicken 11-30-2004, 07:03 PM 8w7's. what is the cdt efcfi-61? i know what you mean a once in a lifetime buy. sofar i have i sets of mb qurat premium componets and the alpine cda-9835 head unit and working on the rest of it.
bowtiethunder 11-30-2004, 10:12 PM sorry for the delay first time I've been on in few days. I was thinking of going with the Kicker CompVR sub which is dual voice coil. I was told that hooking 2 channel amp to dual voice coil sounds close to bridging the amp, Is this true? Also should I go with 2 ohm or 4 ohm sub? Can both be bridged?
97FormulaWS-6 12-01-2004, 07:37 AM The sound from a DVC Vs SVC will be the same.
Which ohm you should get depends on what amplifier you are going to be using. Everything works with everything else.
You Bridge amplifiers
You wire in Series or Parallel speakers.
