engine salvageable?

I hope this is the right place to post this, if not, moderators, feel free to move it.

i recently wrecked my Z28. the engine and trans snapped apart from each other (the bellhousing broke) and the corssmember jammed a LITTLE into the rear of the oilpan.

i took the bottom pulley off, put the bolts back in, used a bar to see if the crank still turned... it did, but sounded like it was rubbing something... ( i think something was scraping against the flywheel in the back (flywheel was away from the motor with the trans....

my dad is a mechanic, but he doesn't feel like pulling the motor in our HOME garage (he works at boeing helivopters, and doesn't have a place to do it anymore)

he is about to just give the whole thing away... and i think the motor is worth saving... i'd like to get another chassis and drop it in... it was a very nice tight motor well kept with 80k on it...

what do you guys think i should do?

No sense saving the motor if you can't see inside

I think you should pull the pan, crank and bearings. Inspect for knicks and
scoring (especially the rear main bearing).

If the bell housing was off axis while the crankshaft was spinning, there's a
good chance the load placed on the bearing has caused some damage.

When my motor blew apart. The flex plate had come apart. Just that bit of
harmonic interference at 6000 RPM was enough to ruin the rear main bearing.

While you have the crank out, replace the main and rod bearings and turn
the crank. Take a couple grams off the crank and help it spin a little easier.

my dad wants to just let a friend of a friend take it off our hands for a couple of bucks... but i say screw that, there's a gold mine of a motor in there, and i want it!

i think i have him convinced to let me pull the motor.... with his guidance of course... i'm no mechanic, but i am not completely car illiterate, and i am definitely down for some hard work if it involves being able to keep my engine.

plus to me, it will be a lot of fun... maybe after i get everything straightened out i can cam it up or havea my heads ported and polished (there's a machine shop 1/4 mile down the road.... i think i am going to have the guy check the balance of the crank first... then get the bottom end in order... all the bearings and whatnot...) then rebuild the top half... it has 80k on it, and could probably use a little refreshing anyway....)

and i figure if i build another car around this motor, i can have the car i WANT... i want another 6 speed definitely (the auto is trashed trans case cracked from the curb and all)..

I may not be able to do this all in two weeks, but i just got a new job doing real estate, and i will GLADLY make a year or two long project out of it... if i can save the engine.
