lilmit77 11-19-2004, 04:48 PM K heres the catch My 87 iroc 5.7 engines just broke down on me? any suggestions on what engine would be a replacement... i was thinking a 383 but not sure.. any body know how much new 350's cost or where i can get a decent engine? or would a lt1 work ??? get back to me thanks!!
Frank89IROC 11-19-2004, 05:28 PM First thing you have to determine is, how much do you want to spend? Do you want a used engine? a new crate engine? a remanufactured engine? Once you decide approximately, how much money you want to put into the car, then the engine is next. I had a remanufactured engine (5.7) installed for about $2,500. They used the TPI intake manifold, distributor and exhaust manifold from the old engine. :)

aklim 11-19-2004, 06:17 PM God is a spritual thing and an engine is a physical thing. How can one replace the other when they are on different planes?
LT1 can work depending on your defination of work. Anything can work too, BTW. How much hassle are you willing to put up with for minimal gains, if any?
I would go with a low compression 383. That way you can blow the hell out of it when you get a supercharger.
lilmit77 11-19-2004, 11:36 PM sorry guys didnt put much info up about it, i was late to hockey and had to leave, but any ways my budget is prolly less then 3000 mainly cuz if i graduate in june im guranted a new ss, so i need this for work and school but it cant be no put put cuz i still gota smash on the ricers, u know!
Zepher 11-20-2004, 12:17 AM SBC 400 is the best of both worlds, BBC torque in a small package.
aklim 11-20-2004, 01:46 AM Will the 23 deg heads that we use fit onto a SBC 400? I think so but not totally sure. Anyways, just curious, will the rest of the stuff bolt up and it will sit nicely or not?
greezemonkey 11-20-2004, 06:19 AM Will the 23 deg heads that we use fit onto a SBC 400?
aklim 11-20-2004, 09:52 AM OK, same question but phrased better. Will they fit on without much finangling, ie bolt on? Don't you have to drill steam holes or something like that?
lilmit77 11-20-2004, 02:47 PM any idea where i can find one??? as in any nice motor???
Dave89IROC 11-20-2004, 03:13 PM any idea where i can find one??? as in any nice motor???
where are you located?

True, you would need steam holes if you used anything other than 400 heads, they can be added to any SB head, and yes they would bolt on no finangling.
any idea where i can find one??? as in any nice motor???
GM 350 crate motor (http://www.sdpc2000.com/catalog/130/GM-Goodwrench-350-Crate-Engine-and-Engine-Kits.htm)
I think they are 250 HP and they have a 290 HP version for 1595.00 too
lilmit77 11-20-2004, 04:40 PM im located in northern california, in san jose, ca.. near san fransico and oakland. i think my budget is around 2500
PyRo9862 11-20-2004, 08:44 PM A God replacement? I think the closest to that you can get is a nicely done 426 :)
aklim 11-21-2004, 01:42 AM I have also heard some comments that 400s are more prone to overheating. Any truth to that or is it caused by people not drilling the steam holes correctly?
85_305 11-21-2004, 12:28 PM Our cars have 23* heads?
lilmit77 11-21-2004, 06:18 PM i still have the stock thransmission in my car still do u guys think that will hold up if i get a 383 or am i gonna need a shiftkit, or a whole new performance transmission???
85_305 11-21-2004, 08:20 PM 700R4 should be fine. A T5 like I have, on the other hand, I would be worried. You MIGHT want to get a heavy-duty rebuild kit, bigger tranny cooler, shift kit, etc... but it will for the most part be fine.
85_305 11-21-2004, 08:22 PM Lol.. *jinx* Gunny!

Yes it will hold. For how long is another question. Before I left LPE, John told me that the tranny was a stock one and would die real quick. I told him it was freshly rebuilt by GM and he said he didn't care. Less than 1 year if I am careful he said. It lasted 6 months with me grannying the tranny. Got a rebuild by www.rosslertrans.com and it lasted for 3.5 years with me beating on it every day there was no snow on the ground.
vjo90RS8 11-22-2004, 12:26 AM whatever you do you better keep it smog legal, you are in CA, id just got and rebuild the 350 and get some nice smog legal parts for it, there is no way you are going to be able to install some high horsepower 383 or 400 sbc into that car and pass smog, unless you keep it real mild, and then whats the point.
aklim 11-22-2004, 08:32 AM You might be able to get wawy with installing a chip before the test that is going to be real mild and then after the test, put back the naughty one.
