I've been stumped for the longest time on this. I have a Legacy 1600 watt amp model #LA870. Things worked great for about two weeks and then the amp went into protect mode. I'm a total newb and was wondering if I could get some help.

1- What are some common newbies ways of sending an amp into protect mode?

also when I unplug EVERY thing except for the power and ground, the protect light is still on. Is there a special way of getting the amp out of protect mode? Because shouldnt it not be in protect mode w/ only the power and ground?

Sounds to me like the amp may be shot... normally if it won't come out of protection mode, then something is wrong internally.

But check for shorts anywheres in your wiring, good/bad grounds, proper connections to the amp, etc...

Other than that, I'd just say talk with someone locally who has equipment and start swapping parts and see what works and what doesn't. Heck, I've got amps just sitting on the shelf in the basement, and in a couple of my cars I can very easially swap out/in different amps. Most peoples setups are this way, it's just a matter of disconnecting a few wires and you can swap stuff.
