9" Question

If I take an old Ford 9" rear axle setup and wnat to put it on my 01 SS what do I need? I know there is a conversion kit but who makes it?

I don't know of any "kits" Strange, Moser, and others make 9" rears ready to install in a 4th gen. If you have the skills and tools it would not be a terribly difficult DIY project, but maybe not worth the time.

Yah, but a friend has a 78 (i think) pickup with this 9" in it, 4.11's ready to go for 350 bucks (he hit a pole, totaled the front end)... so it'd be worth not paying 1500+++ for the thing, imo

Like rich said there is no kit available to convert it. There are a number of things you would have to do to that rear like:

Have the axle tubes narrowed along with new axles
Transfer from your 10 bolt or fabricate mounts for the following:
-torque arm (hardest)
-spring perches
-LCA
-shocks
-panhard rod.

No more abs or tcs
Not exactly sure how our brake backing plates would work with that rear

There are probably other things I've missed but those are the main concerns. Its not easy but if you have the tools and the skills I suppose it could work.

Its not worth it IMO. I was really close to doing one my self with a 9inch I had gotten for free, but you can buy the housing complete with TA mount for $550 from moser. I figured I'd have way more in labor than it was worth. And if you would go through all the work and have something not fit or fail it would be a real PITA.

I used moser's housing and the center section from an old 9 incher with moser axles, gear set and spool. Total cost was about $1900 including all labor, fluid, and tax. It was cheaper than a complete kit from moser, but moser's center section is stronger, but mine will handle everything I can throw at it. If you go that route try to find an old 9inch center that has 3.0625 bearings so you can run up to 35 spline axles.

What i would do is find out if that pick rear end is 31 spline which i'm sure it is. Then i would order a rear end housing, 31 spline axles and TA bracket from Moser for $900. Then install the 3rd member/pumpkin/centersection into the Moser housing. Then you would have a complete 9inch for 1200.
