What does a slipping tranny feel like?

I have a 94 LT1 and when I floor the car it feels almost like the power isnt getting to the wheels, like its getting lost or bound up in the transmission until it gets into the higher gears and rpm's.. could anyone help me, would a transmission shop ride with me and check or would they overstate the problem just to get the service?

Thanks

Make sure it's not misfiring first, but yea DEFINATELY sounds like a slipping trans to me. I just had mine rebiult and the results are OUTSTANDING. I'm feeling power I never knew my ol V6 had!... I'm not saying it's the quickest thing out there but WOW!... It feels like when you put your foot on the gas, the engine gets up there and there is a slight grind sound (not loud) and the wheels are just barely edging along even when you got your foot to the floor. Like your car can't keep up with itself.

Yes, well it just feels like the rpms are increasing but I am not getting all the power at the ground, like I am not moving as fast as a should be, then it suddenly free's up and takes off a bit harder, aw to hell with it, time for a manual anyways. How much was your rebuild?

Would changing the filter, fluid and maybe have it serviced a little bit help, and at a far reach maybe a shift kit as a last resort?

I wouldn't go for the shift kit as it would just be wasted $$$... My rebiuld was actually the cheaper kinds and costed me $1200. If you want a manual, I would suggest driving it like it is until you can get your manual. Changing the fluid/filter? Have it looked at, if there's debris and the fluid's all broken up, then yes I'd go for it as there's no harm in driving clean fluids.

It doesnt exactly sound like yours is slipping. When my trans went.... when i floor it, it starts to take off then the RPM's go up and the car stops accelerating. Is your car bogging down? Most shops will lie to get your money. Unless you know someone. As far as the shift kit if you need a rebuild.....YES get one because it fixes some of the issues the 4L60E has.

Automatic trannies can do some wierd stuff when they go out, some things can be kinda cheap to fix, others require a rebuild.
Mine lost second gear, 1st 3rd and 4th were fine but no second. I pulled the tranny out and a local builder beefed it up for me for 750 carryout, I reinstalled it with a 2800 stall and its been a blast to drive.
Best thing I can reccomend is to find a good tranny shop and let them look at it and tell you whats wrong, then decide which way you want to go.

Well it seems to behave lately, although I cant help but think that maybe its just a loss of low end torque making it just feel like it isnt picking up like it used to. I am almost positive I am in need of a good tune to make up for the added air-in and out of my engine, maybe its the fuel/computer system not being able to keep up. I have had a few times where I slam the gas and the engine almost skips a beat before launching away and I cant help but think that a tune may help.

I would disagree with triumph - shift kits are not going to fix this and depending on the kit and how it is set-up it will just destroy a rebuilt trans. Shift kits don't fix a thing in the 4l60e!

My trans slipped a little when it was cold, and mine felt like if you had amanual trans and you were riding the clutch, the revs would rise but not all the power was getting to the gound. But after it warmed up it would shift OK, but not nearly as good as it did when it was new! I talked to a lot of guys that recommended a rebuild and sent me to Frank @ CPT, after talking to him and hearing what he knows and has done with the 4l60e's I had him rebuild it, and his stuff shifts better then a generic shift kit, he custom matched everything to my setup/preferences.

2CNTRY - to answer your question I changed from the stock converter to a stall! So I didn't reuse the converter. But if you drain it and maybe waste a little fluid by filling it with clean stuf and redraing it I don't think it would be too bad unless you seriously toasted your trans.

A tune-up would definitly not hurt, plus you can probably go to jiffy-lube (or your local equivalent) and get them to back flush the system for you, it should cost under $100. But if you think it is bad that might just be a band-aid, just send it out and get it built right, and you won't regret it! Get a good stall while it's out, your car will perform a lot better.

I DID NOT say a shift kit would fix his problem. I said if he needed a rebuild make sure he had a good shift kit installed also.Although according to Pro-built automatics if you catch them slipping eairly a shift kit can prolong the life of the trans. 4L60E's do have some small quirks that a good shift kit helps to correct them. Oh and BTW the link you posted all their tranny's come with shift kits.........so is your rebuilt trans destroyed by your shift kit yet? lol Steven

P.S. the point of my post that you missed is .....it does not sound like the problem is the trans.

feels like its in neutral, but its in gear and it doesnt go anywhere. Or takes forever to shift.

You are correct, I appologize, you did not say that you reccommended a shift kit as the fix.

But if you read my post fully instad of jumping on me you would have read:
"I talked to a lot of guys that recommended a rebuild and sent me to Frank @ CPT, after talking to him and hearing what he knows and has done with the 4l60e's I had him rebuild it, and his stuff shifts better then a generic shift kit, he custom matched everything to my setup/preferences."

And I never said to not have your shifts improved, my car has a what some people would consider a shift kit, yet there was no kit bought, it is set up for my application! not a "generic shift kit", like trans go, but the "Custom shift kit" that the builder has developed. What I said was a shift kit, meaning generic one like trans go, and if it is setup wrong will just destroy a trans, and that is true!
You can laugh all you want, but if you read everything first, then you might not have had reason to.
