Jameslt1TA 10-23-2004, 08:55 PM this is kind of a funny story. My buddy has this 92 25th anniversary camaro with a 305 and a 5speed, he thinks that it is fast and so does everyone else in school. I bet him that my girlfriends stock sohc neon would beat him and he laughed. So we went to a back highway a couple miles away from school and he pulled into the other lane. We lined up and i said go, she hesitated and he spun his tires for a bit and pulled a head a car length. by the time she hit third she was one car length ahead of him. when she hit forth she was 2 1/2 lengths ahead. We hit about 90 or so and slowed down, we both pulled over and me and my girlfriend were laughing at tyler and his camaro.
He tried to tell me that he missed forth gear and so on. I really think this was kind of sad actually, but stock 3rd gen 305s are kinda slow so tyler wasnt too upset that his car lost.
DrewSG 10-23-2004, 09:11 PM Doesn't surprise.. 3rd gen's are dogs on the top, neons being lighter I don't doubt that they would pull. 305's are like, the worst v8's ever made. tell your buddy to swap a 350 in and that will all change.r
Jameslt1TA 10-23-2004, 10:02 PM i told him to do the same thing and he is looking at 350s and im gona help him do the swap once he gets one, im just afraid that he might beat my ta then
Ray86IROC 10-23-2004, 10:35 PM Ah yes, the infamous 305 TBI 170hp boat anchor strikes again. It does so much for the thirdgens image, GM should have never put that piece of junk on the street. Of course the auto equipped 305 TPI isn't THAT much better either but still...
Oh well, what ya gonna do, plenty of 4thgen base model cars get spanked by girl/family cars nowadays so it's not like they were the only ones. At least with the 4thgens if you got a V8 you got the hot motor that year...
Blu91Z28 10-24-2004, 09:09 AM The Camaro should still run a high 15-low 16 with a decent driver and that should easily dispatch a stock SOHC Neon. One of the guys I see out at the track has a '91 RS 305 5spd that runs 15.7 @ 89 with only a cat-back.

They're soooooooo slow that my buddys bone stock '87 IROC w/ his 115k 305/700R4 TPI (then) ran a 9.8@78mph in the 1/8th mile with a not-so-good 60ft. time. When we compared that time to one of our "acquaintances" (not really a friend) 94 GT w/ full exhaust, 3.73s, posi, best of a 9.7, it sure gave us one helluva laugh. They're definately not something to be hopped up and modified but my god, they're most certainly not slow. Tell your buddy its time for an engine swap, sounds like his 3rd gen has seen the time to be hung out and dried.

Ray86IROC 10-26-2004, 03:48 PM Well your buddies IROC with a 305 TPI isn't exactly a 92 RS with the 305 TBI either now is it. Like I was saying the 305 TPIs were at least a little better... They should have been the base V8, not the TBI boat anchor...
LT1WanaBe 10-28-2004, 12:07 PM IMO, a 305 is for the enthusiast crowd who just likes to say "hey, I gotta V8" and thats about it. Nothing worth modding, you might see your way into the 12s on forced induction perhaps, but nothing more. I'm not going to debate anything for these motors, they make me feel stupid when I think about people modding them

The neon sohc came in 132 and 150hp versions. The 132hp coupe cars only had to pull a 25800lb car. That 3rd gen weighs about 3400lbs right? That would be a better power to weight ratio for the neon. I dont know what Neon his girlfriend has, just saying that some versions of the base neon could hold their own.
toneloc12345 10-28-2004, 09:15 PM 25,000? Sorry but can you post a link where you found a neon that has 150hp SOHC

Depends on how the 3rd gen is optioned. The curb weight for a '92 Camaro Coupe begins at 3105. A '92 RS 305 5-spd probably isn't much north of that. Anything can happen on the street!
FastZinTennessee 10-28-2004, 11:10 PM <---- Previous owner of a '91 Camaro RS w/ 305 TBI and five speed.
Most people on here seem to hate the 305 TBI. It's certainly no screamer, and at the time I had mine I wasn't on the forums so I didn't know what others thought about it. I will say that I had some fun with mine though. I installed underdrive pullies, low temp thermostat, hypertech chip, edelbrock aluminum intake, edelbrock headers and a catback on it. By the time I got done with it the car had noticeably more power than stock. I had a few more things planned but sold the car. Minor things here and there started adding up until I felt like I was driving a completely craptastic ride, so I traded it in. However the motor wasn't giving me any problems, and it still got good gas mileage. It used to get 26 mpg on the interstate.
I guess what I'm saying is that just because it's not very powerful in stock form doesn't mean it's crap. Despite the infamous 80's era GM valveseals that vanish into thin air at 50k miles, the rest of the motor is pretty much solid for at least 200k miles given that you halfway keep up with maintenance. Hell I know a guy that used to spray his 305 TBI and it now is still running with 230ish thousand miles on it. Not running real good but it's still kickin along:lol:
Beanboy 10-29-2004, 09:39 AM 2nd Gen Neon R/T and ACR models have a 150HP SOHC motor.

The 95-99 neon SOHC was rated at 132hp, the DOHC at 150hp, though the SOHC in 95 was a little underrated and getting too close to the dohc, so 95s are a bit faster than the rest.
The 00+ neons are all SOHC (with the exception of the SRT-4), rated at 132 for base models and 150 for sports/ R/Ts/ ACRs etc...
Gotta love how dropping ~ 1000lbs will allow a little 4 banger to whoop on a v8 :)
