Search for a 2nd gen... is this worth it?

I found a 1980 Camaro with an absolute rust free chassis, decent paint (unfortuntely purple), needs a clean interior, and no engine. Comes with a hurst turbo tranny as well though. I can get it for $500, is it worth bothering with? I love the look, but I can't install an engine so I have to pay for it. Any comments? I will either get this or save up for a 73 firebird if I don't get the 78 TA I mentioned earlier.

Definately! It's a steal, especially in a rusty state like Mass. Go for it. Make sure you drop a 350 in it ;) easiest to mod and cheapest! I say buy it now before another person grabs it.

I'm really thinking about it. Body is in GREAT shape which is nice. Has outlaw 2 rims as well and good tires. I can't find a nice 350 around here, but the kid is selling a mid 90s 350 with everything else needed to install in the car for another $1000, but that doesn't include labor. If I can find someone that can install an engine I'll be in business. I just gotta chrome the bumper and paint it black (after I get it running).

Of course, running condition is first. But that is a definite steal in your area. I say go for it. I absolutely love my '75 LT

I'd rather go with the TA. Not because I'm partial to Firebirds, but just because it seems like it might be a lot less work if you're just starting out.
As far as putting an engine in, you can do that yourself... it's not hard.
I learned how to put engines in on this site, I'm pretty sure you could too.

Putting an engine in isn't hard. Having done nothing more indepth than a carb swap, I managed to install one 99% by myself. I had help to guide the engine in place - other than that I was alone in the garage. I even managed to install a new cam and 1.6 rockers on that engine.

Sure, you may not be able to get it running properly, but you can probably get it to run and cruise over to your favourite shop and have them finish the job for ya.

2nd gen with no engine sounds like a perfect excuse for a big block to me... :D

Well I'm going to need a way to drop the engine in then, I have plenty of tools, but not heavy lifting equipment. This is gonna be quite interesting...

I don't own an engine hoist. When needed, I go to the rental yard just before they close, do the job, and get it back just when they open. Usually only charge the minimum when done that way.

I always just rent a hoiset too...

Who does that, how much, etc. I'm basically in the middle of nowhere so my options are limited.

Check your Yellow Pages under Rentals. May be a category specific to tool rental, but what I've seen is most rental yards/shops that cater to the do-it-yourselfer (garden tillers, floor sanders, etc.) will have a hoist. They come in tow and break-down versions. I typically get the break-down type.
