On my '75 LT there is about 1-1 1/2 inches of play on the steering wheel. My father suggested a new steering box. Is there anyhting a little easier/cheaper that I could do to fix this? Or is that the ultimate solution?

Check for worn components while someone works the steering wheel. Idler arm, rag coupling, etc.
You can also try adjusting the steering box, but you'd be best off taking it to a suspension shop to do it:

How's the front end alignment? Is the toe-in correct?

Yep, just took it to Goodyear and got an alignment done, full suspension replaced with KYB shocks, and still no help. My brother-in-law (previous owner) tried to fix it by tightening the nut on the steering box and it still didnt help. My guess is the box itself is shot. So I'm gonna try and look for one at a junk yard.

Take a look at the rag joint on the steering shaft going into the box, first.

My camaro was pretty loose in the steering dept. but replacing the ball joints and pittman/idler arm cleared it right up for me.
