Here is what I just read (and copied) from an auction at eBay. http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&category=43957&item=7922780014&rd=1

" WHAT THEY WILL FIT: They will fit '88 through '96 Corvette. They will also fit 1993 through 2003 Camaro/Firebird or TransAm. They will not fit the "Convertible" model of the '93-'97 Camaro, Firebird or Trans Am. "

Is this true? Are the convertible wheels a different size than the non-vert?

They fit. I have them on my car, as do a lot of people. The OEM wheels somehow fit better, but you got me beat on why they fit better than aftermarket.

Reason they supposedly dont fit is the wheel wells in the convertible have some extra sheet metal in there. But it's not a huge deal.

Fold up the rear seat. Pound a bit. Re-spray with undercoating. Cut off half the bumpstops and their mounting. Roll the fender lip or have it flared. I'll have a little rubbing with two people in the back or a lot of stuff in the trunk, but nothing a little more pounding wont cure. I need to clean it up a bit more, but no big deal. Make sure the rear seat is vertical when you pound. I've heard you'll be upset if it isnt.

But they fit great on my 95 drop top.

I've posted this info several times.... might show up with a "search".

I have a coupe with the AFS ZR1 (GS offset) replicas 17x9.5 front, 17x 11 rear. A good friend on mine had a 97 SS convertible, with an OEM set of Grand Sport wheels, 17x9.5 and 17x11. His fit in the convertible wheel wells just as well as they fit in my coupe, maybe even better, as Geoff noted. The only "extra" metal we could find in the convertible wheel wells was BEHIND the stock fender liners. It did not seem to reduce the space in the wheel wells in any way. Looking at both cars, side by side, I could not see any differences.

It is my understanding that the factory would not put 17" wheels on the convertibles because of concerns over ride quality, not because of any additional interferences.

^Yeah, supposedly, GM thought that convertible owners wanted more of a comfortable cruiser, and wouldn't want the extra harshness of a 1" larger wheel...

Actually that would be 1" less tire sidewall to flex and give a softer ride. Shows you what GM knew :)

 I'm riding on 18' Zo6 wheels with P275 / 35 / 18's all the way around and have no problems. The ZR1's would dance in my wheel wells.
