Want to paint calipers

I want to paint my calipers. I was wondering if i really need to take them off my car or just take off the tires? I plan to clean them and maybe sand them just to make a new outside layer. I was wondering what paint i should use (I did search and saw some other posts but...) i want to make sure they look good. I saw a honda with like shiny red calipers and it looked kind of bad. I have the 5 spoke chrome wheels so I was wondering if i should go shiny to match them or a duller red and which kind i should use?

I'm doing mine right now. I put 3 coats of Dupli-color engine paint on them, and have the "Camaro" emblems on them, now I need to clear coat. Pics coming soon

Re: Want to paint calipers

Before I put on my new chrome Zo6's , I cleaned the calipers real good, I didn't sand. But they wasn't real nasty. I used red engine paint, and put on two layers of clear coat. I used the shiney red and it looks real good. I also got the camaro decals to put on the front calipers. I put the deacals on before I clear coated. They come out realy good. Just make sure you use alot of old rags ot towels to cover your quater panels and stuff when painting. Had mine done in about an hour.

Re: Want to paint calipers

I think everyone else pretty much covered it. I cleaned mine with Brake cleaner and a rag. I then used Hi-temp Red engine paint on mine and put on several coats. After that dried i put on the CAMARO decals then clear coated several times. Mine have been on for almost 2 years and still look great. I plan on doing it all over again this week when my LS1 brakes show up.

<--- wire brushed, 'brake kleened,' and two coats of farm tractor red rustoleum. Been on for over half a year... still looks great.

Re: Want to paint calipers

What color would you recommend for a polo green Z convertible with a tan top? I am interested in these Camaro logo decals you guys are talking about, so I'd like something that would show up on the painted calipers. I'm thinking maybe a simple flat black, silver, or yellow. I like red calipers, but they won't go well with a green car.
