New MT: Ford GT: 11.2@131.2??

I just picked up the newest motor trend and found a pleasant surprise. The article "A twist of Le mans" caught my eye and it featured a trio of supercars (Ford GT, Enzo, Porsche Carrera GT). It was mainly a high speed test in Ford Arizona proving grounds, but the top speed wasn't what really caught my eye. It was the GT's 1/4 mile and traps.

This car seems to be going faster and faster with every new test. How fast was it in this MT article? Try a 1/4 mile of 11.2@131.2mph . Barely slower than the Carrera and Enzo featurd in this test (both lighter and more powerful). For comparisons sake, Carrera ran a 11.1@133.4mph and the enzo an 11.0@133.9. I'm guessing this run took place in hot/humid weather too since the test was done in the middle of some Arizona desert. My 1st impressions were either 1) Ford slipped MT a ringer with a bit more boost....or....2) The GT has been even further tuned and is very underrated at 550hp. If case #2 turns out to be true, it may very well be making something north of 550hp at the WHEELS!! like the earlier rumor indicated.

Hope this isn't old news or a repost. I did a search and pulled nothing up. Impressive/crazy numbers and thought i'd share. Can't wait to see actual dyno's of customer cars. Leno should get his on a dyno ASAP.

To top it off, Motor Trend isn't the quickest at running quarters.

Their 0-60 was only 3.7mph in this MT test. I believe C&D managed a 0-60 of 3.3seconds which is over half a second faster in an earlier test, but they ran a slower 11.6 1/4 mile with a lower 128mph traps i believe. Looks like the GT in this MT test really made up for it big time in the 60mph+ department. Just look at the traps. That bish is really pulling . 131.2mph sounds like it's high 10sec capable.

Btw: when can we ever expect a dyno confirmation? Typical owner seems like one that wouldn't care to test for such thing. Maybe Roush or some tuner will make the numbers public once the cars really start rolling out.

wasn't the next z06 supposed to "blow the doors" off this thing?
i think it'd have a very hard time doing that now even with lighter weight
but then again, i guess that's what the "blue devil" is for

I don't think you have to worry about comfort with this GT. It is surprisingly comfortable, much more so than its GT40 ancestor. Was watching Top Gear and the guy commented on how effortless the driving was and how quiet the cabin felt - no road noise, no vibration - just smooth driving.

Well, some of us (myself included) thought the Z06 would give the $140k GT a run for its money, based on the fact that Ford claimed 500hp/500 lb-ft and a rather portly 3500 lb curb weight. When it became clear that the car was making 550 hp (or more), well, I no longer feel that way. Not that the Z06 should be expected to beat it considering the price difference, but it would have been cool to see it happen.

I wouldn't be surprised to see the next Z06 in the low 120s (trap speed), or upper upper teens, but not 128 to 131 mph.

That is just disgustingly fast for a street car anyway. Especially a car that just about any schmuck doctor or lawyer or stiff suit can walk in and order (Z06).

I was equally impressed with the slalom speeds for the GT (relative to the other two).

Thumbs up Re: New MT: Ford GT: 11.2@131.2??

Imagine what it'll run if some brave soul decides to slap a pulley and tune on it.
And 131 is enough to get deep into the 10's, not that the a GT would ever be saddled as simply a drag car.

I never expected the z06 to be faster, and i can live with that given the fact that the z06 will probably be the fastest thing you can buy south of the GT with its 140k sticker. That is saying a lot! It is simply the most bang you'll get out of any sports car for your $$.

Having said that, the GT continues to impress. Snorm, no doubt...there's crazy potential locked up in the GT's 5.4.

Re: New MT: Ford GT: 11.2@131.2??

Lets not kid ourselves, the GT is being sold by dealers for upwards of $250,000

If a somewhat mass produced ZO6 can compete, thats one heck of an accomplishment. The GT is an awesome car, and even for 250k it is competing with and beating cars that are in the 500k range. It is the ZO6 of exotics. The ZO6 truely is like the 8th wonder of the world. In Top Gears test, a base C6 was 10th in track times. That is incredible. So bet that the Z06 will be in the top 5 for only $60,000. Thats some pretty incredible company. Amazing that the US can make such a competetive car for pennies in comparison to those it competes with. The GT does very very well and is still much cheaper than those it competes with. Awesome cars, and an awesome time to be a sports/muscle car fanatic!

Using ET to calculate hp we get = ~528hp

BUT

Using MPH to calculate hp we get = ~614!!!

I know these are not accurate, but I'm willing to think that the GT is VERY underrated. All calulations were make using 3500lbs.

Re: New MT: Ford GT: 11.2@131.2??

Lets put it this way... talking about the z06...

its a 7L 3 valve engine that is supposed to be 500HP @2900lbs with aluminum frame rails...

Now thatis with MANIFOLDS... strap in a set of headers and drag radials and we WILL see high 10s @13x lows pretty easily...

If you check out the forums .. the z06 STOCK has done 11.8@120mph with DRs and fully bolt on as low as 11.6@123-124mph... Imagine 100HP more and 200lbs less!!! with A LOT MORE TORQUE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I don't doubt the ford GT has a few extra lbs of boost we probably WON"t see in the production car...

So lets hope and see....

The blue devil will blow the doors off of all those little cars 600hp from a TT 427...you get the idea.. (lingenfelter comes to mind 9.45@145mph pump gas devil)

No stock Z06 has gone 120mph. Link.
The fastest stock trap speed out there is in the 117-118mph range.
It is highly unlike that a set of headers and DR's would put a C6 Z06 in the 10's at over 130mph. And it isn't going to be 2900lbs. unless GM decides to sell it with skinnies, no A/C or PS and no seats. The C6 is just about as heavy as the C5. And the C5 has been using hydroformed aluminum frame rails for 8 years.
The Blue Devil? When GM announces it's production, then I'd count on it. Considering it's been nothing but talk and rumor, there is no way of knowing much about it.

Going by this logic...I think a GT with DRs and a couple of mods would easily be in the 10s.

I know that GM guys really really really want the Z06 to beat the GT or even come close to it, but that's a pipe dream. The only way it's going to happen is if someone modifies the poo poo out of it

don't get cocky now, it's not like the z06 wouldn't stand a chance or anything
also, not sure we'll see 2900 pounds
that is extremely light considering all the gadgets, gizmos, and luxuries that even z06s have
