so yeah..instead of spending over atleast $3k for a turbo or something (id actually rather have a supercharger), I was just CURIOUS if its possible to make one on a small budget..or piece some parts together from different cars out there (heck even a 3000GT turbo or something.i dunno)
I have some time on my hands and was just curious if anyone had a successful attempt at creating atleast a small one..maybe even 6psi or something little...Im decent at fabricating things and I honestly dont think it takes a rocket scientist to develop a cheap-o turbo..
No i am not a cheapskate..I just got laid off a few weeks ago and have no money. Just something to brainstorm on my time off! Would a Talon/Eclipse turbo be possible to fabricate to an LT1? I used to have an Audi with a Turbo..maybe even one of those? Even if its a longshot..Im not familiar with Turbos really..except I know for a fact Id rather have a Supercharger that is 100% working..when a turbo has to 'spool' (turbo lag).
Anything literally would work..just something I can get from junk yards or whatever to make on my own..Thanks guys :)

Well, first off I don't think a 3000GT turbo would do ya much good with a V8 because they're very small. But as long as you can make the intake and exhaust manifolds for it and fuel lines and all that bs, you can. Lots of work though.

The problem with running a single turbo on a budget is finding one used that is large enough to produce boost on even a stock CID V8. A 14B Mitusubishi turbo from a Talon/Eclipse is pretty much maxed out at around 350hp so you'd need two of them to supply enough volume to produce boost.

If you did a twin turbo system, 14B's (from a 1st gen Talon/Eclipse) would be a nice choice to start with as they are very compact, and internally gated. Plus, you could upgrade later on, to the 16G turbo's that are the same exact size dimensionally yet they produce upward of 450-475 hp each.

So say for instance you wanted to experiment with two 14B Mitsubishi turbos..What would a single one cost at a junkyard by chance? Im pretty new with force induction and dont know the exact measures to take to build a turbo. If this is too advanced for a newbie on turbos..where is a good place to start finding info on exact build specs and requirements (i.e. intercoolers and stuff that go with turbos to keep the engine cooler) for an LT1 turbo? If I found two used 14B turbos..how do these things mount (custome mounts obviously)...are they low..do they go infront of the WP and would block cool air to the engine from the fans? Maybe Ill start a new thread on Turbo basics.. :p

I was once toying with this thought. I know it's a Mustang site, but there is a forum on Junkyard/DIY turbo kits with lots of info available on what used turbos are appropriate for what displacement/power. Lots of pictures. You can get ideas here:

the VR4's and RT/TT's use 9B turbos....theyre not really useful above 15psi on the 6G72, plus it would be a small step for an 8....the DSM 14b is a good turbo, 2 of them defianetly....dont forget the companies from across the pond, volvo and saab also have some badass turbos

I built mine, but I wouldn't exactly call it "budget". I guess it could have been done for cheaper, though.
