This is in response to an interesting discussion I was following on one of the Corvette forums where a guy was insisting, because his stock LT1 vette ran a 13.2, that a/t were faster than manual cars because of the faster shifting. This is an absolute fact with highly modified vehicles that have gears/shift kits and t/c. But it seems like any 13 second car I have seen, regardless of manufacturer or power plant, will always be at least .2 quicker in manual trim than with an auto, and sometimes a lot more. This includes basically every magazine road test I have ever seen. What times are/were your stock a/t Z28s doing?

my stock 97 Trans Am ran 13.79@101 with a lighter then me driver,with me,it went 13.82,auto 3.23 gears.

 

i have a manual. 13.789@101.81 mph

 

This is one of those things that gets me worked up:

First off, what is your and my definition of stock?
For Instance, Gm HighTech Performance Ran an article once about a LT1 TA saying it was running low 12s "Stock"! Well you looked at the car and he all the bolt ons, tons of weight reduction, Stall, etc... But since he hadn't gotten actually into the motor, so by their definition it was stock.
The guy's car was nice and VERY quick, but stock? Hardly...

If it isn't 100% the way the dealer sold it to you from the showroom floor, down to the tires... It isn't "Stock".

Not trying to thread jack, but some distinction needs to be made here

 

Hi Kris. Stock to me is as the car left the dealer. Only change allowed would maybe be dropping the tire pressure if you chose to. No free mods, open airbox etc. There is a guy on the Corvette board claiming 12.4 from a stock LS1 C5 on street rubber. I don't see it, but I am curious to know how quick the fastest F Bodies are, and especially what the best a/t times are compared to the manuals, since there are more of these cars going to the strip than the Vettes. All the quickest mag times that I have seen for Vettes, F Bodies, Mustangs ,and Supras are m/t cars and I would think if the autos could hang with them it should happen all the time since it is a lot simpler to get a perfect run out of a factory stock a/t than a manual. In fact, if the 2 trannys were close to equal, the autos should be most of the better times, with the manuals sometimes there as the launch and shifting for the m/t are more driver skill reliant. Never mind that a/t cars varifiably put less power down on the dyno, there are a lot of a/t guys claiming sub 2.0 60' times and if this is the case, it would really equalize things. The only reason I keep going back to the magazine test results is that these are usually pretty good drivers, but without having the benefit of 100 runs in a particular car. I know there will always be owners that outperform them. I also know there are guys who will show you a timeslip from a week after they did headers and an LS1 edit and tell you to your face the runs were done bone stock. But just because I haven't seen any 12.9 a/t Z28s doesn't mean there aren't any out there. To me it is more likely than a 13.2 a/t LT1 Vette but the more people you talk to, the more you learn. And if it turns out there are a bunch of 12 second Z28s and some support for the incredible 12.4 C5, then I guess I should raise my own expectations.

 

my buddy ran a 12.92 @ 109 but he does have a k&n 01 ls1 ram air m/t i know it's not stock but how much can that really inprove your times and mph
and a 12.2 @117 with slipping clutch on a 100 shot

 

12.4.... it's just one those things that are easy to say,bs

 

I ran a 13.711 @ 102 before i spent any cash on modding. I unbolted the exhaust after the cat and took the air filter out. And the run could have been a 13.6 as my 60' time wasnt near as good as most of my other runs. it was a 2.099 as opposed to the consistent 2.000s that i was running all night before that run.

 

The fastest auto LS1 that I'VE seen was robvas's '02 Z that ran a 13.08 @ 108+.

Now my car also ran 13.0 @ 107, but it's not quite "stock". All I've got though really are gears, lid and a catback, oh, and the Hypertech tuning. Do the gears add power though? No. And some guys say that the Hypertech will cost power, and the Flowmaster has also be nick-named the "Choke-master" exhaust! SO, my car probably makes stock-ish power, and it runs 13.0.

 

No Gears don't add power, BUt they do keep you in your power band, so Yes they do help...

I think he had a loudmouth exhaust with that run. Not sure though. Either way, it's dang fast.

The times for LT1 A4's and M6's are very similar. The A4 can gain you better traction off the line, but robs HP. The M6 is harder to launch well, but has more HP. I think the shifts with a good driver are pretty similar.

To sum it up. E.T's are similar, but the mph will typically be higher on the M6 car due to the increased HP to the ground. In a 1/4 mile race, the M6 is typically playing catchup to the A4, but eventually passes right about the 1/4 mile mark.
