$900 LABOR to install Gears???

Called a local "performance" shop today to see how much it would be to install 4.10's in my new setup. Said it would be $900.00 labor to install gears and to "freshen" up the 10 bolt. I was to provide gears, install kit, and fluids. I was thinking around $250 to $300 for labor. Am I in left field or what???

~$300 for gear install sounds about right. There's a shop down in NC that was offering a gear install special for just $200 and included having the speedo re-programmed.

$175.00 here in Texas...... And I provided all the parts....

Yea, it's funny, I've totally torn apart my engine, and I'm preparing to do a clutch install--but I've been told to not even think about doing gears myself. Too many special tools and precision measurements need to be done. Otherwise, you get gear wine or worse--failure. It's just tough to pay someone else to work on her--after doing so much myself. I do know I'm not paying $900.00 though........

I've been involved when my Dad has done the gears in my car.....both last year with 3.73's, and now this year with 4.10's (yeah, yeah, I like doing things twice!:rolleyes: :p). Unfortunately, the 3.73's last year whined really bad. It wasn't the setup, it was the gears. The 4.10's I've got now, setup exactly the same as the 3.73's were (all within Richmond's spec's) are very quiet:).

The only "special tools" required are a micrometer (to measure the thickness of the various shims used to position the carrier side-to-side, and measure the depth of the pinion) and a dial indicator to measure the backlash on the ring gear. As a rule, the pinion goes in with the factory shim behind the bearing, but the carrier has needed to be repositioned a little to set the backlash properly. Since we've done the job a couple times now, we had it down to a "fine art" and can do the gear swap in the car in about ~2 hours!:D

$900 is wayyyyyy to much to installe a ring and pinion, tell that shop they must be crazy. Not only that, $900 is a waste being put into a 10 bolt. For $900 you can probabily find a used 12 bolt or 9inch and never have to worry about it breaking if u make any amount of decent power.

A ring and pinion barley cost $100. So they want like $800 to do a 3 hour job that isnt THAT bad. lol What is the name of the place that quoted you that? That is kind if funny.

For sure!;) Look at it like this, if the gears cost $100, and you do it yourself, even if you f#(@*d up 5 times, you'd still only be out $500!:D :thumb: And surely after installing the gears a couple times yourself, you'd have it figured out, so then there wouldn't be a problem with the gears, and you'd still not have spent $900!!!:irk:

It's F-body Motorsports in Charlotte, apparently $200 is their normal price for gear installs according to their website. I'd highly recommend them, I was down there for their Grand Opening in May and they're a highly knowledgeable group of people.
