im having a tci 700-r with reverse manual valve bodies and a 3000 stall installed in my car this week. i know the stock 10 bolt is weak but i dont have the money for a 12 bolt right now so thats outa the question for a little bit. my real question is with a install price of about $350-$400 should i put a free set of used 3.42's i got from a friend in or should i go and but 3.72's (i have 2.73 now  ) im also planning on running a 100 shot if that matters. i guess what im asking is, is it worth the install price to put in 3.42's
sorry if that was confusing i think i lost myself a couple times there.

I made sense of everything you said, don't worry;).
HOWEVER, I foresee a problem. If the used 3.42's are factory gears, then they won't work in your 2.73 rear anyways:rolleyes:. Not unless you buy a 1/4" spacer and longer bolts, which I don't recommend:no:. The problem is, you have a 2-series carrier, vs. the 3.42's come on a 3-series carrier. You will need a set of gears intended for the 2-series carrier (don't worry, they make all of them --- 3.42 / 3.73 / 4.10 --- for a 2-series:thumb: ).

stick with 3.42s or numerically lower gears since you're running nitrous
also, like capn pete said, if they're factory they won't work since yuo have a 2 series:(

like the boys said you have to change carriers to run 3.42's or 3.73's. In other words you either buy a new differential or you buy gears that are a 2 series carrier gear.
But to answer the nitrous part, they usaully a 3.42 with nitrous......so you don't just spin off the line.
