what can i do to make the stock rear end stronger? i have a ta girdle. would an eaton or auburn and a solid pinion spacer help too. i cant afford a 12 bolt right now

The real weakness in the 7.5" 10-bolt is the gears themselves, not necessarily the axles. You could throw in as much money as you wanted to in the rear ends, upgrading axles, different posi-units, etc., but the size of the ring gear will still be a major weak point. Luckily you have an auto, less shock on a hard launch on slicks, so your axle may last longer. You're best bet would be to keep of the hard launches and slicks until you've saved enough for a 12-bolt or a 9". Tom Z95m6 09-02-2004, 08:02 PM He's actually kind of right. Thats is why everyone always breaks the gears. That is also why people upgrade to rearends with 8.5, 8.8, or 9in ring gears. I wouldn't dump to much money into the 10bolt even with an auto because i believe it will still break. Maybe not as soon with a 6 speed but it will still be a problem later on i believe. ABA383 09-02-2004, 10:14 PM I've been running 420rwhp thru my 7.5 for 10 years...As said before the weak link is the 7.5" ring gear, but I've found that stock axles, a Pro Auburn limited slip, GM gears, a TA style cover (mine's a Summit one from Spohn, which was just added a few weeks ago..) and BFG Drag Radials seem to be the right combo for an A4 car...Decent traction, but just enough tire spin to avoid breakage...If you are serious about hooking hard on ETs or slicks then don't bother with the 7.5. Save for a 9" or 12 bolt. Just my .02... --Alan Capn Pete 09-02-2004, 10:50 PM I'd say probably the "strongest" 10-bolt setup there is would be getting 4.11's (not 4.10's) where the ring gear is 37 teeth instead of the standard 41 teeth. The pinion has only 9 (compared to 10, 11, or 12 for typical 4.10 / 3.73 / 3.42 applications) but the fewer # of teeth on the ring & pinion makes it that they are actually thicker, and thus, should be stronger:thumb:. Putting an 8.8 in isn't a simple thing to do. They cut the axle housing off a 10bolt and weld them on to the center section of the 8.8. Then they also build and weld on a torque arm. Something you would need some skill at doing to get it right i believe. Probably not just something for anyone. I bought it for $1200 shipped. Its not his top of the line model. I just wanted gears and so rather than paying close to $500 for gears and install. I just paid 1200 shipped for the 8.8 with new 3.90 gears, rebuilt ford posi, complete minus the axles. All i had to do was slide in my axles out of my 10bolt. Later on i'll either upgrade to aftermarket 28 spline axles or convert it to 31 spline. As for the ABS i had to build my own 3 Channel set up. ;) | ||
