who else is getting the hell out of here? i'm leaving thursday morning after the neighbor helps to repair our roof as much as possible ... however, everyone who has seen our house agrees that the roof is going to be gone.

i might be going to georgia or cape coral (punta gorda area) ... havn't decided yet.

I was thinking about leaving earlier today, but then I started to think:

Will it be hard to get back once it's over?
Will I be able to get the gas I need once I run out?
Won't I want to know if my house is damaged ASAP so I can get to work on it?
Do I really wanna miss this? :D

Thats what I'm doing. I may hav ethe materials needed ot board up my place... well sort of. Lets jsut say they may invent a term "Eric rigged" as in wow you really "eric rigged" that thing.

Looking over the structure of my apartment, I think I might be staying in a "private" shelter.

My buddy on Conway got looted after the Hurricane. Morons prey upon people when they are vulnerable, they have no guilt. I am going to stay and ride it out. Going to a hotel is not really a possibility. I have just a few spots with no shingles or tar paper on my roof. So I am hoping nothing gets drenched but the spot over my garage, and hopefully the ceiling doesn't fall on my cars. I am worried though. I went to Bass Pro Shops today and picked up 100 rounds of .40 S&W and 100 12 guage shells.........just in case.

it NEVER ends...

we are in NC mountians on vacation...now the wife wants to ride back to GA, get some crap, then ride back to NC to wait out the storm...

arrrrggg...this storm seems HUGE by the Weather channel.

anyone need any supplies in Jax?

for Hugo we went to WV and brought back supplies for our neighbors in Chasn, there was no food, water, batteries or charcoal in Columbia when we stopped, a few days after Hugo.

joy.

My fiance and I thought about heading up to a friend's house in NC, but we decided against it. I can't leave my mom here in the house alone, she'd have no way to help herself if anything really bad happened. And I'll have to defend the house if anyone decides our house is a good target for looting. I may need to get my gun back from my dad :) It's only a .22, but it'll still hurt someone if I shoot them a dozen times

it showed on the news where it took 4 hours to get thru home depot in Daytona.

I've got my truck up here in NC, and a empty 16x4 utility trailer, and a Home Depot card if someone needs plywood or whatever.

i can bring some stuff to Jax when I come to GA tomorrow.
I am leaving the bike up here for the storm, and the trailer will ride like crap empty, anyways.

we'll prolly head back early Thursday (before noon).

I want to get the F out of Dodge but part of my responsibilities at work are for disaster recovery. So I need to be available assuming no major daamge/injuries. I'm not as concerned about damage to the apartment as to the car. Too many trees and light poles in my complex. I'm not even sure where the nearest parking garage is for me to park the car and/or sit out the storm. :(

It's the chase vehicle. We're taking the truck too. It (truck) got a ding on the hood from Charley. It'll hold all our crap and we'll lock the fiberglass cover to. Maybe I can run like Smokey & the Bandit... :D

Every single person in my family has evacuated already, except my mom and I. I even sent my wife off with the family, just in case. Unfortunately, I also have to be at work barring major damage/injuries, so I'm stuck. I'm also the eyes and ears for all of my family that left. Guess I have my job cut out for me as my family lives from Arcadia all the way over to here. Half of the family went to Georgia and the other half went to NC. Man, it sucks living here now, doesn't it?

Traffic on 95 doesn't seem too bad right now (~11pm). If you want to get out, do it before traffic gets horrible and storm gets closer. Nothing like trying to leave and getting stuck in the middle of it on the interstate. The big problem is finding gas. Even here in Sanford there are still lines at a couple of places. This could get rough...

I'm worried cuz a little pussy storm named Charley came through ripped a 3,000 AC unit off the roof of my work, caused a good $600 in damage to my paint, uprooted trees everywhere and ****ed up my power for like 6 days. I was outside for a little bit and watched the rain gutters and shingles fly off my building like nothing.

Even though most of us got power back, I know its barely working, there are powerlines still down around my apartment, in fact during a little wuss thunderstorm the other day we lost power for 40 minutes, to give an idea how wussy this storm was they launced a rocket out of caneveral during it.

Honestly I woudl feel a ton safer in south florida then I do here, even if I was getting the direct hit from the storm. just the building differences. Jsut little things like outside doors opening ******ds, instead of inwarsds and such.

Everyon says this storm shoudl die when it hits land, and do nothing in orlando, well when Charley hit port charlotte, I thought worse case scenario by the time it hit me way up in East Orlando it was going to be a Category 1, but likely a tropical storm, but nope. Was a cat2 almst cat 3. In my opinion, there is less land for frances to go over when it hits.

If it makes you feel anybetter, I spent 5 horus on the roof of my work yesterday cleaning up the mess from charley to prepare for frances.

I'm not sure why so many O-town folks are wigged out. The power is the big variable. I spoke to someone with Orange County gov today, and she said the power situation could be really bad, because they don't have the reserve crew they had for Charley.
Outside of that, my house isn't going to blow away.

I sent my wife and kids to Fort Myers (in-laws) for one reason only- to protect my daughter's (she's 3) sanity. She is a little too observant, so every black cloud, and every power outage is a hurricane. So, we're looking to prevent "issues." Outside of that, we'll be safe. Even if it rolls in at 150mph, it'll still be 110- by the time it gets here.

I've got plenty of ice, water, food...all ur batteries and flashlights for when the power goes out. I boarded up all 15 windows yesterday after they completely shut down every college/school/and most jobs around Palm beach county. I feel fairly safe...the reason I had not evacuated was mostly because of gas. I dont think I could go out right now and find a gas station within 50 or 60 miles that actually has ANY gas. I put my Pontiac Grand Prix GT and my 93' Z28 in the garage and the ford explorer is going to have to be a trooper outside..Ill move it up against the garage parallel to it so that the winds hopefully cant do much to it. If i see this thing coming straight at us or even if it slightly dips a little south, Im also set to just toss what I need in all 3 cars and get me and the family the hell out of here...prolly head down to miami or something. Cuz they are just gonna get a little rain and maybe some mild 30-40 mph winds. May have to wait down there to get some gas to come back, but whatever. Be Safe Ya'll

Dont ever think for once, that this one aint gonna hit you....its moving slow and its BIG AS ****!

We here in O-town are freaked because damage is going to be severe. There is debris from charley still everywhere. On my street, there are several stacks of fences Charley knocked over, there are bricks from the walls around my neighborhood lying around, there are giant tree logs from knocked down trees that were cut up, etc etc. My moron neighbors are making no effort to remove the trees or fences, and everyone is going to a hotel but no one is boarding up their houses. I fully expect my neighborhood to be destroyed, I just hope the debris doesn't trash my 95 Z28 any more. If a fence destroys anything I own, the first thing I am going to do is walk to my neighbors house, ring the doorbell, and knock him out for being stupid.

The damage will be much more severe here. I'll post a pic of all the debris from the last hurricane lying around my neighborhood. That alone will make the damage worse, not to mention the fact that most of my neighborhood is missing shingles or part of their roof. So the rain damage will be much much worse. I expect my ceiling in the garage to completely collapse when it fills with water. I just hope I don't have to start replacing the drywall on my walls as well. Not to mention, my neighborhood floods during 3 inch rainstorms, with 10-20 inches of rain.....yeah it will be worse than Charley.

I think people should realize that even if this hits at Cat 1, its a BIG storm. EVERYONE will have some effect from this storm. They showed a graphic on either the Weather Channel or Local 13 that showed the storm being roughly the same size/shape of Texas. And there is a substantial difference between winds for 1 hour (a la Charlie) and winds for 24 hours (anticipated for Frances). Lack of power also creates damage too. Without your a/c and with all the moisture, you can have substantial mold growth, which can make a house unliveable as well. Things that toughed it out through Charlie are probably pretty weak now, plus the ground is saturated, which makes it easier to uproot trees and stuff. SO, with saturated ground, 100+mph winds for a long time, and fairly substantial pre-existing damage, you still think this will be a walk in the park? I think not... I am not "wigging out", I am thinking of this in a rational manner. Be safe, wherever you are and good luck!

my work, right now all we have covering a big ass hole in our roof is 2 sheets of plywood, covered with a banner from the "Hulk" movie with some 80 lbs. blocks on it, and its screwed to the roof, but still has a lip on it, I could see it flying off.

I realize I sounded very negative, but I didn't intend to. I only meant to inform some people who could be taking this too lightly. Many of the people in our apartments are snowbirds/yankees and I get irritated when people act like this is just a summer rainstorm. Yes, you should take it easy and not stress, but also take it for what it is, a serious storm. I know that I won't "forget to step outside Sat night/Sun morning and marvel at the power of Mother Nature". Right now, all my hurricane prep is done so its Beer o'clock. Take it easy and stay safe.

I agree...

I get a little paranoid, prepare, pretty good, have everything set, then sit back and relax, drink...

I don't go out and spend alot of cash because well I don't have much. My water is empty jugs I collected around my house, filled with water. wood, and screws, I got from my work, I did buy some extra non-refrigerated food, and a $5 grill. Oddly enough I think all and all my biggest bill was the liquor store.

I figure prepare, be ready then relax. Have the stuff I need for me and my girlfriend, I HATE being any sort of burden or have to ask for help, I will do it I need to but I try to avoid to need to do that.

I joked about you being a "bundle of joy" but didn't take it that you had a negative attitude. I think your post had a lot of info in it that people should consider. For me, I think the biggest deal is going to be the hours and hours of rain followed by the wind... even if it is only 50 to 75 mph. The more rain you get the more it "weakens" the ground and the less wind you need to topple the trees. That's my main concern right now since I have big trees about 2' from my house.

Sorry to hear that you've got trees so close to your place Brent. Did most of the big branches come out during Charlie? Kinda makes you want to have no shade trees around (even though they're almost necessary in the summer). I helped clean up my family's places in Arcadia after Charlie. Man, their 30 year old trees shed SO much stuff it was crazy. Luckily nothing big fell on the houses, so I hope the same goes for you Brent and everyone else. That post-'cane cleanup sucks!

The path of Charley originally was projected to go into Tampa Bay and then straight up through my town of Inverness. At the last minute it turned and came in further south and went more up the middle of the state. I ended up getting less rain than a normal Florida afternoon and basically ZERO wind. It was a non event for my area so Charley was a dud for me.

So, I still have all the trees around my house... several of which actually HANG OVER the house.

Most of the above are pics of trees around the house but some show my TRASHED garage. Still haven't recovered from my toilet "malfunctioning" over a month ago and flooding one side of my house. Sigh. Oh well :D

Thanks for the wish of luck... I'll need it if Frances continues on its present track. However, I'm not going to know the outcome because I'm already stuck at work and am on "lock down" until at least Monday morning. Got some friends/family checking on the place for me though so don't none of you think you can come up and get a bunch of car parts from me for "free". LOL!!! :D

It is 7:20 PM and waves of rain bands are becomming more frequent. With the rain comes the wind. I have my cars on the North side of the condo with a tarp on the 1999 Z convertable, a car cover on another car and the 1993 race car is on the trailer, chained and double strapped down with a cover also. We have brush piled up everywhere, but is has not moved as yet. We put the heavy logs on the limbs to hold it down.
These hurricanes screw up car shows, the drag strip and take a lot of our time to clean up the mess, but Florida is worth it. When the northern states get the blizzards and ice we will be enjoying the great weather!

I have a new 383 built to the gills sitting on my engine builders stand and cannot find the time to do the install. Maybe next week if the remaining trees don't fall down.

Take care.

Well Hurricane Andrew cut across FL and exited out on the west coast, picked up again and slammed up the gulf and hit again, then cut across to the east .

Oh my gosh, I just saw the projected path and it is projected to hit Pensacola.

The eye is forming again and about to hit land; its 9:15 .

I don't think it has either. It has just started to make its NW move and will be running up along side you later today. You'll be in the upper right portion of it as it goes by you... that is a pretty bad spot. Expect your worst hammering later in the afternoon I do believe :)

Hey Brent, I got a question for you. Why do the transformer's "pop" or blow up or whatever they do? It seems like here in Tuscawilla all the power lines are under ground, and the transformers seem like they'd mostly be unaffected by the storm. What causes they to blow up? And when they do why to they put out that eerie blue or green light?

We got popped pretty good fot a while over here. Most of the neighbors lost the rest of their shingles. My roof poored water in my garage ceiling and it finally collapsed. The drywall landed on my Z28 but I was ready and it was covered. I am thankful it weakened, if it had hit us at its earlier strength, we'd all be in serious trouble. This was a lame excuse for a Hurricane in Orlando, much much much milder than charlie. I'm sure it was worse by the sea, but here we didn't even lose power.

This one is a lot worse for me. I'm not at home but have been notified that I have a tree on my roof and one down in my yard. I've been without power for about 10 hours too. With Charley, I barely got any rain and basically no wind. Can't wait to go home on Tuesday to check out the damage. I was told it doesn't appear there is any structural damage so that is good!

I'm not saying I'm disappointed or anything, but I just expected alot more. It seems like the bad bands of the storm just plain missed the places I was. My parents house in Volusia Co. was ok too, but they don't have power. They also said that on their street, about every other house has a tree on it

Land O' Lakes here. Not too bad so far. Lots of strong gusts and rain earlier today. Been up since 1am today when the winds shifted causing the bushes to start smacking my window, plus I've been pretty much an insomniac lately so I figured I stay up and watch my Lost in Translation rental and down a Guiness.

Around 3-4am the water pressure weakened, then died completely. But around 6-ish it was back up again. There is a supposed boil-water precaution for some parts of Pasco. Lights have been flickering, but no completely power loss yet. My cars are fine so far, just covered in leaves. And my parent's house where I'm staying at is on a hill, so no worries about flooding. So far so good, thank God. Good luck to the rest of my fellow Floridians. Just wish this Frances would hurry her ass up outta here.

I lost power sunday right at 9AM, and it came back on sometime earlier this afternoon to my surprise. Charlie knocked my power out at 9PM on the 13th. It seems odd that the power goes out at such convenient times. I think I heard they sometimes shut down the grids early to prevent further problems.

I was rather unimpressed by Frances. It was aggravating to wait for it to pass. I haven't seen any updates on it since I lost power. I take it it made landfall up by Tallahassee?

crap. called neighbor & power was off, supposed to be off for-EVER due to multiple Xformers down in our area.

called around, found last generator in town (while in NC) bought Demo model, dropped 5 bills on little Gen & toys to hook it up.

power was back on before we got halfway home :irk:

dude in Lowes said some chick from Orlando drove up to SC & NC, bought at least 3 Gen's in Shelby, tons of gas cans, then headed back to O town.

got back home last night at about 9, found the neighbor had turned off the gas and water for the house ...

figured out where to turn the water on and how to re-light the pilot lights and unpacked the car, set up the tv and turned it on only to watch about 6 second of television before KABOOM outside and the power went off.

sigh ... we're getting ready for yet another week without electricity.

Melbourne checking in. Just got power back from when it went out Sat. Only lost 3 shingles, screened in pool enclosure and had a neighbors tree down in the front of the house. The rest of the neighborhood didn't fair so well, massive shingle loss, trees down, etc.

I was in NC too. Cherokee to be exact. Took the family to Dollywood, got to do some backwoods mountain road driving in the SS, stayed in the Baymont Inn. All in all, we had a nice surprise vacation. No major damage here either. But for us it wasn't a matter of safety that we went to NC. I just didn't want to hear the kids asking when it was going to be over...

hee heee.... I got lost on the BLue Ridge parkway...and ended up in Cherokee.

looked like a nice place to spend a few days (and a lot of $$....)
anyways, how did the SS do on Highway 19? 19 goes from Cherokee up to Maggie Valley, then onto Asheville.

19 was rough as a cob on the Bike, looked like frost heave had created ripples and bone-jarring bumps all over. too much traffic to get any speed, just as well, but i still hit a few bumps real hard.

how much fun was the SS on the Parkway? I was thinking about taking ours back up sometime, but speed limit is 45mph, and most speed I seen was ~60 due to so many POV's, lotsa trucks and granny's cruising.

during the week, traffic was very light (early Fri, was raining too), but on Sat & Sun, there were alot of cars.

is your SS lowered? I don't think it would be enjoyable to go 19 in ours with it lowered. but the Parkway would be Woo HOOO during the week day!

I lost power for like 20 hours. Not too bad, wasn't even that hot...

My work got pretty messed up again, but not as bad as charley.

We had a freaky tornado scare on sunday. They predicted one was going to land in the waterford Lakes towncenter area, and told people to call people they knew out there because, they may not have power and not know whats going on, then they had a firetruck drive around going 5 mph with siren blaring in the mall. Sky was looking crazy, and we had a couple squalls of rain that was more rain then I saw either hurricane drop, but tornado never hit.

You guys have cold Pepsi's????? Dogs!

I haven't had a cold Pepsi in a week! Even the resaurants that are open have warm soda!

I had a palm tree flop over onto my house, but no damage....had to chop it down with Steve's chainsaw. At Tasha's, she had 5 trees fall and lost most of her roof shingles... water got in and messed up alot of drywall. Two fell on the fence, so I was outside during the freaking storm cutting the tree to re-string the fence so the horse wouldn't get out since it was freaking out.

Maybe see you guys Friday night if there is gas anywhere.

You're lucky....but I'm thinking of using vacation time and leaving soon. I still have a lot of cleaning up to do.

I'm surprised our big raydome didn't get rolled away! It's still there...alot of trees down and the walkway coverings twisted up on the Palm Bay campus, however.

The SS is lowered 2" via DMS springs. I also have the ST 35mm solid front sway bar. This is the first time up there since all my mods. I only run 19 from Cherokee to Bryson City. My favorite road is Newfound Gap (441) between Cherokee and Gatlinburg. There was too much traffic this past weekend though. I had an old guy in an S10 hanging 5 feet off my back bumper for about 15 miles like I had anywhere to go or any ability to go faster. Finally the tourists in front of me turned off at a scenic overlook. I looked back at the guy as if to say "Ride my butt now!" He had no chance and soon was out of the picture. That was the only 45 seconds of fun I was able to get in because shortly thereafter I caught up to the next group of brake-riding slow pokes going 35. The guy caught up but he seemed to lay off my bumper after that. Maybe his eyes were burning from the untreated exhaust I fed him. Maybe his ears were still ringing from the mighty LS1 roar I shot at him. I wish I knew where the "Tail of the Dragon" was. I would have hit it too.

I made a post over in the bike forum, to see what they say:

Deals Gap is near the TE/NC border, US 129:

your story makes me feel OK about not taking the car up.

funny about the S-10. what ARE people thinking?

a guy I semi-know bought a new 350Z, and he rolled up on me one day when the wife gave me PerGra to drive the car.
and he kinda thought the SS was faster, but was not sure. he was revving a bit, till we are already rolling along, and I laid a patch of posi-rubber about 45 mph.

he followed me to return the SS to it's rightful owner, said he was pretty impressed, decided he had nothing for me!
