A/C recharge

Ok here's the scoupe. I rebuilt my motor so obviously I had to remove the A/C system to get at the motor.

Now it's together and I'm trying to recharge the system with no luck what so ever. I got one of those little recharge kits w/ the hose and what not. So far I've dumped over 40 oz of the stuff into my system and it still reads no pressure and no cold air comes out in the car.

I'm adding to the low pressure side. I was also shorting the A/C pressure sensor to force the compressor to kick in as I added the fluid. All this with no luck. The fluid runs into the system gauge goes up. Line freezes and gauge goes back down. Fluid stays in bottle. With some hoaxing and about 10 minutes of shaking the bottle the fluid evacuates the bottle to the line but still no pressure.

Next my luck gets worse. I now short the sensor to add more fluid and the engine stops. Check relays, A/C relay fried.

So anybody here an A/C expert willing to help me out? Thanks!

Are you sure that the compressor is continuously running at all times?

I'm not a AC man ,but you should not have to short anything to charge the unit. When you add the coolant it should kick in the pressure switch so the pump runs. As for your filling problem it is probably a dirty pluged Orfice Tube. Good luck with it. :)

I'm not sure. How can I tell if the compressor is constantly running?

Also the Hanes manual said to short the harness to insure the compressor is running at all times.

I just hope I didn't fry the compressor by shorting out the sensor. Thanks for your help!

Well I may be wrong then (new stuff) about the shorting out thing. You can tell if the compressore is running by looking at the pulley,if it is locked(kicked in) both the front and back part of the pully will be turning,not just the back.

If system were opened, you need to vacuum it before charging. Then you can add oil and refrigerant. Better do it in some service.

When you opened the system you let air and moisture in what's supposed to be a sealed dry system. Starts to cool, moisture freezes and plugs up the expansion valve, pressure goes sky high. Need a new expansion valve, dryer/receiver can, new oil charge, probably a new o-ring set, evacuate (vacuum sweep) the system for an hour or so, then recharge with correct amount of refrig. Kind of a poor setup on these cars that you can't just lay the compressor aside to pull engine.
