How to get the T56 to mate to the bellhousing?

Hey guys,

Im having some troubles getting the T56 mated to the bellhousing. There is about 1/2" to go until it seats on the bellhousing. Are there any tricks to doing this?

Any help is greatly needed!!

Once the trans is close enough to the bellhousing, I start threading in the bolts and snug the transmission in that way. Some people say not to do this, but after multiple trans installs in at least 3 cars, nothing has gone wrong yet. Good luck.

Oh, I think he means aligning the input shaft. What I do is I put the clutch alignment tool in the middle and see where the splines are and hold it in the same position that I put it in next to the input shaft on the T-56. I line it up best as I can with the T-56 sitting on my chest (my head towards the engine) and try to match the splines as best as I can. Lift up, push Input shaft in the middle of throw out bearing and just wiggle it in. Took me a good 2 hours for my first tranny which was a T-5, now I can do it within 10 minutes.

Put a couple bolts in the bell housing and tighten til they stop (don't pull it in with the bolts), Hook your clutch up and push the pedal in the tranny should pop closer to the motor, Then you can probably snug it up with the bolts as long as they turn easy enough and you don't have anything mis-aligned.

im having trouble getting the trans fully to the bellhousing. I have verified that the discs are aligned properly and being engaged by the input shaft, by measuring the distance to the last disc, and the length of the input shaft.

The smooth part of the inputshaft is getting stuck before the throwout bearing most of the time, and then if i can get it past the first part it wont usually go in any farther.

Damn, you bench press that thing in? I use a floor jack with a wood cradle I made to hold the trans in place. It works very well and no lifting of it at all. I did the bench press method years ago on a Nova I had with an M21 4 speed and I thought that was pretty tricky. I cant imagine bench pressing a t56 into place, thats one heavy trans! I must be getting old.

To the poster, try having some one in the car push the clutch pedal while you push the trans in the rest of the way. It's either the splines or the pilot bearing thats holding you up. Releasing the clutch disc usually does it.
